NFC East falling apart?

The so called "best division in football" is in rough shape. A look around the news stories this morning shows a bunch of bad news for several of the NFC East teams.

First and foremost is the shoulder injury to Redskins RB Clinton Portis. Considering Portis is the Redskins offense(gaining over 1,500 yds on the ground last year), this is bad news for them. He suffered the injury, which was confirmed by an MRI ina preseason game against the Bengals. So far the only word is that he's out "indefinetly." "Right now, it's tough to say," coach Joe Gibbs said. "Obviously, it's going to be a while."

Second is the major problems going on with the New York Giants. Both Lavar Arrington and Carlos Emmons, their two starting outside LBers, have been injured all preseason and are still not healthy. Those injuries and the loss of Strahan for their first preason game led to thier defense getting shredded by Baltimore.

The biggest and most obvious weakness coming into the season on the Giants is the interior of their defensive line. They lost a quality player in Kendrick Clancy and made no major moves moves to replace him. They instead decided to rely on former 1st round pick(and so far bust) William Joseph, who routinely tends to dissapear in games. The tough NY media and fans are starting to turn on the guy heavily... what's worse is that he's refused to address the media since he was drafted in 03. So fans and media alike have been left wondering who he is and if he has any explanation for his poor play.

In response to the general bad play from his defensive line, coach Tom Coughlin unleashed this gem..

I will never use that – you know, this guy was here, that guy was there," Coughlin said. "I thought we were soft up front, to be honest with you.

That's right, he calls them soft. Now, maybe he thinks this will motivate his team? Not quite, they've already fired back at him. Pro Bowl DE Osi Umenyora came out against Coughlin in an article in the NY Daily news today after a team meeting where Coughlin reportedly blasted the defensive line.

Obviously, I'm the worst defensive end in all of football after hearing the comments that were made in there," he said. "At this point in my career I feel like I know when I made a mistake. There's nothing a coach can say to me that I haven't said to myself 10 times already. As soon as I mess up, I know. So you don't have to do that to me.

Let the record show that in July of this year, I made a statement indicating my belief that only 1 team in the NFC East will be above .500 this year. Portis going down for the Skins is going to kill that team. (A RB with a bad shoulder will not recover during the season - too much pounding he will take.) The TO circus is already set to explode in Dallas (Tour De Oxnard, try Tour De 6-10!). Giants are next. . . .

I keep hearing people screaming about a TO circus when nothing at all has happened. OH MY GOSH, PARCELLS WON'T ANSWER TO QUESTIONS! THAT MUST MEAN HE HATES HIM AND DIDN'T WANT HIM ON THE TEAM!! Really? It couldn't just have anything to do with the fact that NOBODY wants to answer the same stupid questions numerous times a day, every day, for months on end?

Now, I'm no Owens apologist, I've got a clear record of despising the guy no matter what uniform he's wearing. But let's wait until something's actually happened to say something's happened. Nothing outside of absurd predictions indicates that a TO circus is set to erupt.

Just because TO's hurt doesn't mean anything. He's sitting out of practice because he has a history with these kinds of injuries and doesn't want to take any chances. I don't blame the guy.

Wow its amazing how fast the tide can change on you in the NFL. The NFC East is still primed to be the dominate division in football. The injury to Protis hurts the Skins but is not their downfall. THey were looing to lighten his workload anyways this season with Al Saunders calling the plays and 2 new WR. The Giants are just as good as they were last season, and missing Lavar could be a good thing for them. Finally dont count on this TO explosion that everyone is talking about, stop believing the hype.

I agree. The Portis injury hurts, but it doesn't crush them like it would have last season. This year, a lot of the offensive pressure will be places on Randle El, shifting a lot of the burden from Portis (or whoever runs the ball for them this year). Randle El gives them a much more dynamic offense than they had last year.

The Portis injury is a killer. The Redskins offense would have thrived with the running game taking some of the pressure off Mark Brunell. With this injury, Mark Brunell will be forced to do more on the offensive end. Ladell Betts could only do so much.

Furthermore, John Madden made a statement about the NFC East that is thought-provoking. Even if the NFC East teams were fully healthy, every single NFC East game gets more and more physical as the season goes along with each team turning it up a couple notches. Thus, Madden believes that only one team will make the playoffs from the NFC East and will possibly be eliminated in the first round due to a breakdown from the regular-season matchups. Think about how flat the Giants were in the 26-0 loss to the Panthers in the playoffs last year. Or how flat the Redskins offense were against the Bucs and Seahawks after their offense had been on fire down the stretch.

I agree with the statement that only one team will come out because they will beat each other up. However, I think whoever wins it (I'm picking Dallas) will win it all. They all look strong, with the exception of maybe Philly.

Sorry, by win it all I mean the NFC. The Super Bowl winner will come out of the AFC again.

I would be shocked if one team really dominated that NFC East division with say a 12-4 record or so. I know many that favored the 'Gints heading into the season as a championship conteding club, but their non-conference schedule is (on preseason paper) boardline ungodly and I agree with Madden in that the intensity of the division rivalries could have a longterm impact on the quality of play down the stretch. DRE-LO's Giant-Redskin point on the matter is quite prevelant.

Also, because of his quote I like Osi even more now than I did before I got up this morning, if that is at all possible because I was pretty high on Osi when I went to bed last night.
