NBA Draft: Point Guard Prospectus

There are point guards in this draft that will become very good NBA players. Some will become starters, and one or more may even become a star. The problem for the General Manager of any team in need of a point guard is to determine which one is the best. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise, because the best player to come out of last year’s draft, CHRIS PAUL, wasn’t even the first point guard drafted. The Utah Jazz thought so much of DERON WILLIAMS, they traded up to #3 to select him, one pick before the New Orleans Hornets became extremely fortunate to find Paul sitting there at #4. The reasoning of the Jazz was sound. Williams is bigger than Paul, has more experience, and is a better shooter in the clutch. But Paul is special, and that is the quality that always separates the good players from the great ones. It is what the best GM’s have a knack for recognizing.
So, who, among this crop of point guards, has that “special” quality? RANDY FOYE is the best scorer. MARCUS WILLIAMS is a natural playmaker. MARDY COLLINS has the best size. Perhaps a player like RAJON RONDO or DANIEL GIBSON will flourish in the NBA. This is the jigsaw puzzle that GM’s are paid to solve.
Here are five point guard prospects to watch:
~ RANDY FOYE, 6’3, Villanova: Physically gifted and highly intelligent, but must prove he is actually a true point guard.
~ MARCUS WILLIAMS, 6’2, UConn: Williams has all of the tools necessary to be a very good lead guard at the next level. He is steady and can work as a playmaker or as a scorer.
~ SERGIO RODRIGUEZ, 6’3, Spain: No point guard in this draft is as creative with the ball as Rodriguez. He has amazing vision and is an assist machine. But, the result of his flashy style is that he turns the ball over more than is acceptable.
~ JORDAN FARMAR, 6’2, UCLA: Very talented. Farmar likely would have been the top PG drafted next year if he had stayed in school for another season. Nevertheless, his considerable skills will tempt a team to take him in the top 20.
~ MARDY COLLINS, 6’6, Temple: He may be a combo guard, but Collins is a dependable ball handler and passer. His size makes him an intriguing PG prospect.
