NBA Brawl a sign of the times?

Ten players were ejected for fighting Saturday night (December 16, 2006) during a game between the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks. Seven players wound up getting suspended (3 from Denver and 4 from New York) after a brawl that involved punches thrown and players flying into the crowd. Last time something like this happened it involved the Indiana Pacers against the Detroit Pistons' fans on the court and players in the stands in 2004.

The players were acting like a bunch of punks. They did not show any respect for the game of basketball, the fans, nor themselves. But is this really a surprise?

As our society continues to deteriorate into a collection of people losing touch with morals and blurring the fine line between right and wrong, it is no surprise that adults being payed too much money to play a kid's game can't behave themselves on the court.

And the NBA is not alone. Baseball and Football have experienced an increased in these types of situations also. Surprisingly, Hockey, the sport known for breaking out into a fight in just about every game, is gaining a little more control over the problem with stricter rules and harsher penalties.

Until these punks that play sports realize that they are not bigger than life, and learn how to act responsibly, this will continue to be a problem. Parents, teach your kids, because apparently the parents of the brats in professional sports right now did a poor job.

Does violence only occur amongst professional athletes? I have seen violence occur with college athletes (don't get paid), high school athletes (don't get paid), people who aren't athletes, etc. I still don't understand why people are surprised when athletes turn out to be just like the rest of us. Violence has been a problem since the beginning of man. To think that this is "a sign of the times" is naive.

I think that its naive to think that violence is a new thing. However, the way that the fight in New York broke out, and the way that the fight with University of Miami broke up, they do represent a sign of the times. These are fights that broke out because someone thought they were disrepected. Look around in the media (TV, music etc.) and you hear guys talking about we must protect this house, you cant get disrespected and if someone does then you have to take care of business. Yes violence is sports is not something new, but the way these fights have broken out recently is derfinitly a reflection of the society that we live in.

Isn't that why all fights break out, though? Because someone thinks they are being disrespected?

everybody knock it off. there have always been fights, there will always be fights. why is everybody's panties in such a bunch. in hockey there's fights nightly. in baseball there are bench clearing brawls. why does evrybody come down so hard on the ballers? is it a race thing? comments like they are being disrespected and posse to break out the guns sure make me think so.

i agree with the author on this. Gone are the days of classy basketball players like Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, and in are the thugs of today's game. And the worst part is that the Knicks talk like they earned something by fighting.

The one problem the NBA has in instances like this is the proximity of the fans to the action. One of these days some 6'8" guy is going to lose his cool and take a swing at someone and instead of hitting his target he's going to take out some kid in the front row. Stern needs to go back to the minimum age requirements and make sure these kids get educated in life. These guys go from 18 year olds living at home with mommy making dinner and doing laundry to all of a sudden having to do all these things themselves and not having a clue. They might be physically mature but not even close mentally, and one day there will be a problem with this bigger than any of us could ever imagine.
