My Favorite Team is Trying Hard to Make Me Find a New Favorite Team.

What the hell is going on here in Hell? I mean, Phoenix... it's just as hot as Hell. Today, the Phoenix Suns have dealt away the most servicable big man they have in Kurt Thomas as well as TWO future first round draft picks for a conditional second round pick?!?!?! All to clear some cap space and get a $8 million trade exception?

The old adage in basektball is "Don't trade Bigs for small" - how about "Don't trade away Bigs just to get rid of future draft picks you don't want to afford."

Who is going to do THIS for the Suns next season? I will miss you, Krazy Eyes Kurt!
Who is going to do THIS for the Suns next season? I will miss you, Krazy Eyes Kurt!

It is becoming more and more clear to me that Robert Sarver is freeking cheap. He only wants to win the bottom line. He has handcuffed the franchise that was thisclose each of the past three years.

For the last THREE seasons, the Suns have dealt away draft picks (all players that could have helped the Suns) just to keep under the cap and away from luxury taxland. That drove me nuts - Just come out and say that you don't want to win... Now they are divvying out the bevy of draft picks they have accumulated... for what?

THEN they signed Grant Hill just to spite medical convention, to spite me and my Anti-Dukeness and to accumulate MORE curses on the Franchise's forlorn loincloth. Clearly the Hill signing was a ploy to make money more than to win. Possibly, a ploy to give me an Instant Aneurysm. People around the Valley of the Sun heard the name "Grant Hill" and they got excited! This isn't 1997, folks... it's 2007! Name recognition does well for gate reciepts, but little towards banner hanging.

Seriously, Grant Hill is not a winning basketball player. The Suns have played more playoff games during Amare's 5 year tenure than Grant Hill has played in his career!

Shave Nest isn't getting younger, I'm happy they didn't deal 'Trix, even though trading him and his max contract made the MOST sense - plus you can GET something in return for Shawn.

But I also remember two years ago when they "blew up" the team, trading run and gunners Joe Johnson and Quentin Richardson to build a team designed to run FASTER and built to battle the Spurs - Raja Bell was added to defend Manu and Krazy Eyes was known for giving Timmy D trouble on both ends. They had a plan, a vision and I liked it. It made basketball sense.

Too bad the Franchise has an invisible curse lingering over it. The "Curse of Neal Walk" perhaps? Or are we into Year Two of "The Curse of Colangelos Scorned"?

I know I might be over-reacting a bit, but WHO are the Suns going to get for an $8 mil trade exception and a bit of cap space that's a better fit than Krazy Eyes Kurt? He was the perfect compliment to Amare. Kurt can drain the J from 15 feet like he is practicing Chinese water torture. He pulled defenders out of the lane to open it up for Nash and Amare's two-man game. Kurt muscled, out-hustled and out-spazzed bigger men every night. He gave the Suns a touch of The Nasty (even though he is a super nice guy, he is not fun to play against) I don't like trading him (AND two conditional first rounders) for nothing.

Of course, he has been injury prone as of late and he's flipped the odometer a few times...

I will miss James Jones's energy, defensive prowess and slick stroke from Threeland. I have no idea what happened with Jumaine Jones or Pat Burke but Sean Marks won't energize the crowd in a Bo Outlaw/Paul Shirley/Pat Burke fashion...

So we're down to STAT, Bo Diaw and Sean Marks as the only players over 6'8" on the roster... I'm completely befuddled.

There's still lots of work to be done before training camp. I like Alando Tucker - even though I'm not sure where he fits in the rotation quite yet. I'm hoping The Blur turns the corner. Having Pape Sow around ensures favorable words from Marc Stein (until they cut him), D.J. Strawberry adds the prospect of "Daaaaaaaaaarryl!" chants and at least "Robs" Banks is showing some value in Vegas... albeit, against Summer Leaguers, woo_... hoo_...

I'm not giving up on the Suns just because they are trying to rid me as a fan (I'm along for the Amare ride no matter what!). I still believe in Coach D'Antoni and there's always the slim possibility that Grant Hill stays healthy and contributes (even though he can't run or shoot a three) positively.

If I didn't think I knew better, I'd say minority owner-cum-General Manager Steve "Oral" Kerr was doing favors for his good friends in San Antonio. They better pull something REAL good out of this... or I will be tasting a LOT of vomit this season.

Go Suns!

This is a huge problem with the current luxury tax system. None of the owners want to spend extra money to pay the league and would rather make bad basketball decisions because they know other owners will do the same to avoid the tax. One of the few teams (the knicks) willing to actually pay the tax is too stupid to know how to use their money and everyone else is afraid to, therefore you're seeing alot of mediocre teams. The Nets waived Hassan Adams and his Huge $1.5 mil contract rather than pay the tax. something needs to be done about this awful system

something CAN be done... SPEND the freeking money! Winning will make the tax irrelevant!

Sarver (a supposed billionaire) barely scraped the funds together to buy the team (with a LOT of help from minority owners) - that should have been the first sign...

It comes down to one thing if you're an owner - do you want pay for the pieces you need to WIN or do you want to save a couple million dollars? Cheap.

Great post. Believe me I feel your pain. Without those future draft picks, how can Paul Allen continue to stock the Blazers with great young talent by buying picks from Phoenix? That is troubling.

Oh, and while we're here, if you see Sarver, make sure you send my thanks for Jones, Sergio and the very exciting Rudy Fernandez. It has been a pleasure.

That said, Phoenix is going to regret off loading both Jones and Thomas this year when they get to the playoffs, though I think Hill was actually a good signing for them. To bad he can't guard Duncan.

There's something else in the works, there HAS to be. I liked James Jones alot. He is better defensively than people know. And he can stroke it - but if they go back to the composite ball, he gets freeked out by the ball. We gave Luol Deng to the Bulls too...

p.s. we have the Hawks' 1st round pick next year, which was a double victory, because that's gonna be lotto and Joe Johnson was going to get max money, regardless -- we were smart not to be the ones to give it to him.

Grant Hill was a phenomenal sign -- do you realize that we signed Piatkowski for the same money last year?

Hill is a former superstar who can add 10-12 points a game -- potentially for about 30 games next year, due to injury -- but how can you argue with signing a guy for less than two mil a year?

Which leads me to this:

"I will miss James Jones's energy, defensive prowess and slick stroke from Threeland. I have no idea what happened with Jumaine Jones or Pat Burke but Sean Marks won't energize the crowd in a Bo Outlaw/Paul Shirley/Pat Burke fashion..."

What the Hell are you talking about?

In case you haven't noticed, the Suns only play like 7 guys and every guy you just mentioned is awful.

James Jones?

You will miss him?

I almost threw my remote through the TV every time he attempted one of his unconfident, haphazard shots in the playoffs. He was a serviceable regular season player who folded in the playoffs for two straight years (just like Q Rich did in '05).

This year we ended up with two four-year college players, who will be mature and potentially passable and next year we have a lottery pick.

Calm yourself.

Sarver is a douche, but this team is set for at least 3 years.

You realize that the most positive point you made is the only move Sarver made right (letting JJ go to Atlanta) and that was by default of ATL being inept. Hill sucks. He can be a great clubhouse presence, a team leader and whatever he wants - he is not good, he is old and he is not a winner. PLUS he is the mantle bearer for the Duke Curse.

I don't even know what the trade exemption DOES. From what I gather, it lets them make a trade that would, at the end of the deal, put them $8MM or less above the cap. It doesn't mean they get to take on an extra $8MM in salary, though, if they are trading players in the deal, because those salaries have to (somewhat) match up. So they could trade a pick for a player, but not a player for a player. But... they have no picks. So the exemption is basically worthless.

I believe the exemption helps so that the salaries don't exactly have to match up... so if there is an $8 million exemption there can be an $8 million difference (+ the normal 25%)... don't quote me on that, but that at least is my understanding.

the exemption lets them take on $8mil extra in another trade - example - they can trade a player with a $4 mil/year deal for a player with a $12 mil/year deal and the deal is ok for league purposes and they won't pay luxury tax this season. Or they could sign 8 players at a million each... etc.(essentially they traded KT for Seattle's space) But the exemption only lats a year, so if they trade for someone with more than a one year deal, they're in luxury tax land next year guaranteed.

I agree with a lot of the original post... it is a shame that the owner cares more about the bottom line than winning a title, especially with a team this good and this close... but Grant Hill was a fantastic signing. He's obviously a large injury risk, but he's still a really solid player that can help off the bench. He's not going to be starting or anything, but he should be a massive upgrade over James Jones as the 7th man.

Sure, Jones wasn't awful. But Hill is better at everything else... rebounding, passing, scoring... Jones was a decent 3-point shooter (38%) but he didn't do anything else well offensively. This should also take some of the pressure off of guys like Nash and Barbosa, because Hill can do a good enough job of running the offense when Nash is out of the game. When Hill is healthy (and again, this is certainly a legitimate concern) he is still a good point forward that can handle the ball and get them into the flow of the offense. Jones could not do that.

One man can't win a playoff series... KG has only won 2 playoff series in his life... his teams are like a combined 2-8 in playoff series... would you want him on your team?

Grant Hill is older, and he's not a star. That's obvious. But he's still a really good role player that will be great as 7th man off the bench for a team like the Suns. The wide open play is perfect for his style, certainly better than a spot-up shooter with absolutely no other offensive skills. Jones was a 3-point shooter with no midrange game, no ability to create his own shot, and no ability to create a shot for others. On a team with a bunch of shooters, isn't it more valuable to have a guy that will create for others, as Grant Hill can?

If you don't see Grant Hill as an upgrade over James Jones simply because his teams (emphasis on the word team) hasn't won a playoff series there's no point in continuing this line of conversation, because I'm not sure what else to say.

Hill will be making less money than Jones and does a lot more things well. Certainly I see your point about the dealing of draft picks, etc. That's not good. But I just don't see how Hill is anything but a great signing, especially for the price.

They could have had Michael Finley two years ago for less... and there's still more Jalen Rose/Tim Thomas/Jim Jackson types to be had - it's what they do. If Amare gets into foul trouble or PLEASE NO! hurt, WHO is their big man? There BETTER be some other moves coming...

Finley would have been good, but you can't really look back to that right now... I'd rather have Hill right now than Jalen Rose or Tim Thomas (unless it's a motivated Tim Thomas, and there's no way to tell when that guy will show up). Another big man would be good and I'm sure Kerr will do something... but in and of itself signing Grant Hill for what he signed for is one of the best moves of the offseason.

Here's the thing. The realistically ideal position the Suns wanted to be in is over the cap but under the luxury tax threshold. This allows them both the mid-level and lower-level exception and doesn't cost them double to sign a role player. The problem is that the contracts they really don't like (Boris Diaw at some fraction of a $45 mil) and Marcus Banks (mid-level a few years ago) are hard to move so Kerr needs to move one of his enticing pieces (marion or barbosa) to be able to get rid of bad contracts. Once he does that, then they can keep their first round picks and nice role players (james jones, kurt thomas) who help in the postseason. Diaw and Banks aren't doing anything making money sitting on the bench. With that said, the trade exception, if the Suns use it could net them an above-average big with a bloated contract.

I'm not sure I understand all the bashing of Diaw... his role was diminished with the return of Stoudemire and he came into the year a little out of shape, but he's still talented. He's the 2nd best passer on the team, guards multiple positions, and has a decent midrange shot. 2 years ago when he had a larger role he averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. It's not like he's stealing money. He's really solid and a great fit, he just doesn't have as defined of a role with both Amare and Marion playing.

I can't believe you can even attempt to defend James Jones. He was such a joke.

I agree that the Suns are cursed -- I grew up going to every home game and I watched us blow 3-1 leads to Houston, in person, in '94 and '95.

However, if you are pissed at the front office, riht now, you have mental deficiencies.

I wish Brian was still up there, but the Suns are going to win 60+ games next year and have a really high lottery pick (Atlanta is going -- shockingly -- suck).

When Sarver bought the Suns in '04, it was the 3rd most valuable franchise in the NBA, despite a 29 win season that year.

We have the most valuable player in professional sport. Criticizing the Suns is retarded.

The team's best player was Rex Chapman for like 4 years -- do you want to go back to those days? Wesley Person?

Maybe you weren't enough of a fan in the glory days to realize how special it is to have this team, now.

But I was a nine year old kid going to 41 games a year at Veterans Memorial Colesium when we beat the #1 seed, 63 win Lakers in the Conference Semis in '90.

When you're from Arizona, you take what you can get.

The Suns are cursed, but they play the right way. Someday, it will pan out.

To read you bitch about this team just makes me sad for you.

Maybe it is because the Suns have given me so much for so long ... but maybe it's just that you should just shut the F up.

We'll win 60 next year and we'll be in a precarious playoff matchup ... but, when you're FROM Arizona, the pride the Suns give you is more valuable than any championship.

I'm not bitching, I'm not pissed, I just don't like what they're doing. I have that right. I have "toed the company line" long enough. They should have kept the team in tact OR made clear steps to get better. Making moves to make moves is not a successful business model. Running a franchise to make money is not conducive to winning - I want them to win, that's all!

Grant Hill is a craps shoot with loaded dice. AT BEST. I watched a lot of him in Orlando - my buddy is a Magic freek. He laughed at me when Hill signed. When a Magic fan laughs at you, that can lead to disgruntlement...

Hey, I'm still a fan and I'm not going anywhere - blowing off steam in July.... I'll reserve final jugement for when they get done making deals. Because they HAVE to make more deals now - two guys over 6'8" won't cut it...

Manny, a Magic fan has no right to laugh at anyone, ever. They paid Grant Hill $92M for absolutely nothing -- we are paying him Eric Piatkowski money. Piatkowski gave us nothig last year and we were awesome.

If Grant Hill never enters a game next season, it won't change the fact that the team will be good.

The Magic are so retarded that they signed Hill to a $92M deal WHILE HE WAS ON CRUTCHES!

The Suns don't make those mistakes.

Sarver wants to avoid the luxury tax and he has an elite team -- do you honestly think the loss of Kurt Thomas will hurt this team?

Allow me to remind you that the team lost AMARE F-ING STOUDEMIRE for all of 05-06 (those few games he played don't count) and almost won the Conference Finals.

The reason the Diamondbacks sucked from '03-'06 was that they were complacent in regard to wasting money when they were good ('99-'03).

I'm glad to see the Suns not make that mistake.

Who the Hell are we really going to draft with the 27-30th pick next year?

We drafted Nash, Marion and Stoudemire after terrible seasons.

Luckily, we don't have that problem, of late.

It's teh smartest team in sports ... and the least lucky.

Bad luck eventually ends.

You know what, you're right! They're gonna be good regardless and whatever Grant ScHill can bring us, I'm elated! Maye he can get his redemption by taking the Suns to the Championship - it might take a miracle of those proportions! Any chance we can find what Christian Laettner is up to? Bring back Googs!

OK, seriously, what you write makes sense, but it just doesn't feel right. This is still Robert Sarver's grimy mitts on everything - He resigned Amare at the Max without knowing Amare was on crutches... I think that's dumber than signing a guy just coming off of surgery a la Orlando signing Hill (even if he wasn't a winner).

He backed into the JJ deal and got lucky with Nash being as effective as he has been -no one projected it but D'Antoni.

But for THIS reason more than any other - I don't want Grant Hill's mojo ANYWHERE near Steve Nash. Nash is due for breakdown at 3...2... I like living on pins and needles as much as the next freek, but I don't like resting uneasily about Steve Nash's health... His locker better be at the opposite end of the lockerroom.
