My College Football Top 10

There's so many rankings... AP Poll, BCS Rankings, etc. Well, I figured I'd toss my name in the hat with my top 10. This is just the order of what I think are the top 10 teams in the country.

1. University of Michigan
I've said before I consider them the best team in the country, and they did nothing to change my mind Saturday. The offense wasn't as explosive with Mario Manningham out again, but the defense was dominant in the 20-6 win over Iowa. Drew Tate didn't get anything going in the passing game, and the Hawkeyes had 41 yards rushing.

2. Ohio State University
The Buckeyes are more like 1A than 2 for me, as they continued to impress on both sides of the ball in a 44-3 drubbing of Indiana. Troy Smith is the best college QB in the nation right now, and they have the playmakers. With games against Minnesota, Illinois, and Northwestern coming up, they'll cruise undefeated into the game with Michigan.

3. West Virginia University
What a running game. I know Pat White isn't a very good passer, but he doesn't have to be in this offense. I know that West Virginia hasn't really played anyone, but their closest margin of victory this year was 17 points. That's good. I think the combo of White and Steve Slaton (#2 in the Heisman running now) is enough to put them above USC as they head into Louisville in 2 weeks.

4. University of Southern California
How impressive does that season-opening thrashing of Arkansas look now, with the Razorbacks running through the SEC? The talent is there for the Trojans, they just need consistency from the young guys. They should have two relatively easy games as they head down the home stretch, which includes games against Oregon, Cal, and Notre Dame.

5. University of Florida
Theoretically, Auburn should be above Florida because they beat them, but I still think Florida is the better team and would win on a neutral field, which is why they're at #5. With a game against a suddenly anemic Georgia team this week, the Gators look set to cruise to the SEC East Title, barring upset. And that season-ending date with the Seminoles is always a good one too.

6. University of Texas
Let's make one thing clear - Nebraska is a very solid team, especially playing at home. Texas got the break with the Huskers fumble late, but they still played a good ballgame. Colt McCoy continues to look extremely impressive... making plays throwing and running the ball, and not making big mistakes. And I think Limas Sweed is starting to put his name in there as one of the best WR in the nation.

7. Auburn University
I don't think anyone would mind seeing a Florida/Auburn rematch in the SEC Title Game, but Arkansas might have a little something to say about that. Auburn has to win out to have a shot, and with their conference games remaining being against Ole Miss, Georgia, and Alabama, they have a great shot at that.

8. University of Louisville
Louisville is not nearly as explosive without Michael Bush in the lineup, but they're still very dangerous. Brian Brohm is excellent, the receivers are dangerous, and Kolby Smith and George Stripling are doing a good job filling in for Bush. With the offensive firepower of Louisville and of West Virginia, that game in 2 weeks could be the best game of the year.

9. Clemson University
Clemson gave one of the most impressive performances I've seen all year on Saturday night. Defensively, they shut down Calvin Johnson, and harrassed Reggie Ball all night. Offensively, well, look at the numbers for the RBs. James Davis ran for 216 yards, CJ Spiller ran for 116 yards and a score, and also caught a 50 yard pass. On that 50-yard TD catch, the moves he put on were ridiculous. He made a couple of GT defenders look foolish trying to tackle him. Huge Thursday night game at Va. Tech this week... after that their last 3 are at home.

10. University of California
They had a hard time getting by Washington, but it was through no fault of Marshawn Lynch. Lynch ran for 150 yards and 2 scores, including the game-winner in OT. Still, it would worry me some if I were Jeff Tedford, because Washington turned the ball over 5 times (compared to 0 for Cal) and it still took overtime to win the game.

Just missed: University of Tennessee, University of Arkansas, University of Notre Dame

Especially after this weekend and the trouble Michigan had with dispatching Iowa in the Big House. When compared to OSU earlier season beating of Iowa at Iowa, seems a little backwards.

You obviously didn't watch the game this weekend. Michigan dominated the entire game defensively. Not to mention, Mike Hart exploded in the 2nd half with over 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Don't forget, Drew Tate said during the post game press conference that Michigan was the best defense they played all year (they already played Ohio State).

Tartan did you watch the game or just look at a box score? I'm not trying to say Michigan is a better team, it would be stupid for either side to make that claim since both teams will likely meet undefeated now, but they dominated Iowa defensively. It never seemed like Michigan wasn't going to win, not even when the game was tied 3-3 in the 2nd half.

Look at the overall numbers. Michigan allows the 5th least total yards in the nation. Not in the Big 10, but the nation. This is due to them having the best rushing defense BY FAR in the nation. They have allowed 269 total yards in the season on the ground, thats over a 100 yards less than the next best defense.

Ohio State has allowed less points a game, but generally allows teams to drive on them more often than Michigan will. They are 15th in total yards allowed and have given up more than 3 times as much yards as Michigan has on the ground. They depend a lot on turnovers, which Michigan generally does not give up frequently.

Also keep in mind that Michigan's best offensive player was not playing during the Iowa game. When Mannigham is in the lineup, we average 33.5 points per game. Without him, only 18.5 points per game, 15 points less a game. Thats a big difference. He WILL be back for Ohio State unless something goes wrong.

Wait a few weeks guys...then we can see who really is best. Until then no one really knows for sure.

I really think Michigan is the best team in the country when Manningham is healthy. Love that defense, the passing game is very solid with Manningham, and Mike Hart is the best RB in the Big 10. I certainly couldn't argue with anyone that felt like the Buckeyes are #1, because they're a great team, but at the end of the day, I like Michigan a wee bit more.

Rutgers was probably 14 or 15 for me... very, very nice win against a solid Pitt team, but the rest of the schedule just isn't that good. When it came down to, I'm not sure Rutgers would beat the teams in the top 10... though they very well could prove me wrong in a few weeks.

Where's Rutgers? Right where they belong with the 102nd toughest schedule in the country. Who have they played? Who have they defeated? Sorry, with their schedule, they don't get a cookie for defeating Pittsburgh. When the best team you've defeated is Pittsburgh, you're going to be on the outside looking in every time.

I want to see West Virginia play Rutgers. I agree that West Virginia has a great running game, but Rutgers has an amazing run defense. With their defense and running game I would not be surprised if Rutgers were to beat West Virginia. Actually, when I think about it, the teams are very similar. Pretty poor passing game but one of the top rushing programs in the country.

No, they don't. West Virginia plays Lousiville and Lousiville plays Rutgers, but Rutgers and WVU don't face each other this year. Bad year for that to happen.

actually aswaff you're wrong. Rutgers plays Uconn this weekend, then Louisville at home on Thursday night. Then Syracuse and then......West Virginia. If RU beats Louisville and WV (on the road)....then EVERYONE will be talking about Rutgers!!!

I'm hoping that WVU will run the table, but if not, it would be great if Rutgers went undefeated. All the hype about Louisville coming into the Big East last year as the ruling program still makes me a bit nauseated. I'm happy to see a football program with such a rich tradition (played the first intercollegiate football game) go beyond being "respectable." On another note, I think the ACC should lose their BCS bid. The ACC worse than the MAC.

yeah, i agree. i think when Rutgers plays Louisville in a few weeks, it should be interesting. It is a Thursday night game and both teams should come in undefeated. Game is in Piscataway so, should help Rutgers a bit.

hey swaff- i just looked up the long horns. not too impressive. decent team, nothing to really brag about though, is it?

north texas - ranked 105 ohio st. - ranked 1 ---got blown out big time rice ranked 92 iowa st ranked 58 sam houston st. (what is this?) baylor ranked 60 texas tech ranked 46 oklahoma st ranked 56 kansas st. ranked 57

Rutgers plays two teams inthe top 10 in a couple of weeks. Then we will see if they are good or not. If they beat Louisville and go into WV undefeated, sorry but longhorns have a somewhat soft and padded schedule.

Wouldn't call it blown out big time, but solid loss to OSU. Seems like you just want to select the bad teams on the schedule. OU (win), Nebraska(win), and Texas A&M (thanksgiving game) are all on the schedule.

ashaft said that rutgers had a weak schedule, yet they play both louisville and west virginia. two top ranked schools inthe nation. texas plays some good teams, but best team played was ohio st. and they GOT BLOWN OUT!!! if rutgers is able to beat louisville, then they would have knocked off a great school and remain undefeated.

not to say that longhorns are a bad team, but in college football it is hard to determine top teams. they really need a playoff system just like other college sports. If Rutgers gets blown out at home by Louisville, then yes they were unfairly ranked, but if Rutgers wins? maybe the CPU isn't so off afterall.

i think rutgers will crush uconn with their power running game this sunday night...then they rest up for november 9th when they play louisville. i'm thinking rutgers might steal this game, their running game is one of the best in the nation. quarterback is a bit weak but he shouldn't hurt them too much.

where did ashaft go??? texas barely beat texas tech....i think that was really really bad for them. i would drop them down to number 20. i mean you have to be UP for these games. no excuses could have LOST to an unranked team. they really have a soft schedule except for a few top 20 teams. the one tough team they faced they were BLOWN OUT BIG TIME. not sure i would include them in my TOP 10 anymore....they don't deserve it with such lackluster play against NOBODY teams. sorry.

Okay, Rutgers is now 8 - 0 after beating UConn tonight. I'm thinking Big East Football is where it's at this year. We should have 4 legit bowl teams and one potential BCS Champion. Big East and Big Ten are the two elite conferences. ACC, Big Ten, and SEC second tier conferences this year.
