My BCS Playoff Idea

I am so sick of the BCS. Every year at this time its the same thing, some type of who should be in the national championship arguement. With the recent launch of nobcs.net, an online petition fans can sign, and a place where fans can voice their distaste in the BCS. Heres my plan I say, we take the top 16 teams in the BCS poll. Then organize a March Madness style bracket, with two divisions of eight teams. The First Round could take two days, playing four games both days. You would need about four venues, something which would be very easy to do with a large stadium in basically every major city in the US. Have one game start at noon, the next at 3:30,the next at 7, and the "big" game at nine. March Madness games overlap, so I dont see why football ones can't either. The NCAA is worried that a playoff system such as this would wreck a big game in the regular season. But, think about this, The Patriots vs. Colts match-up was in the regular season, and these teams could very well meet in the playoffs, but were ratings horrible? Not if you call the highest rated regular season game in NFL history horrible. So with the Top 16 as of today, heres how a tourney like this would play out. It's not perfect, but its better than whats going on now.

What is your idea for venues? For example, I can see problems with fan travel in the first round alone for LSU v Hawaii, and Oregon v Clemson among others. How would the venue be chosen. If for example in the Oregon v Clemson game, if it is held at the Georgia dome, it would be all Clemson fans.

I forgot to mention that I do like this basic idea though.

Although I like the idea of a playoff, the system you've proposed doesn't appeal to me very much. I don't like the idea of just taking the top 16 from the BCS. I think there needs to be a system that rewards winning conference championships. I also don't like the idea of having games in neutral locations. Better seeded teams should be rewarded with having games be at their own stadium. There needs to be much more of an incentive to have a great regular season. That being said, your system is 10 times better than the current BCS system.

I like where you head is at but you don't take into account. For instance, you still have the same situation with teams being left out of the top 16, just as you do today with the BCS. What is going to say a Virginia is a better team to play in this system than a Boston College? See what I mean. You still have teams that are going to be left out that will most likely should be included in your playoff system. I'm not sure how other states do it but in Louisiana we do a power ranking system based off of strength of schedule. District champs (similar to Conference Champs in college) automatically get a playoff spot and all of the other spots go from the power rankings. It seems to work quite well and maybe there is an idea.

There will still be controversy, but any complaints lodged by fans of 17th, 18th, and 19th ranked teams can easily be answered with "Well, you lost two/three games."

That is easy to say that they may be 2 or 3 loss teams...but what is we have 17, 18, or 19 teams that only have one loss? Then that argument is out of the window.

There is one flaw in the idea... that's the college presidents, who would rather eat glass than have a playoff system. Their argument is that the players miss too much class as it is. Let me expand it a bit further... take the 64 best teams in Division 1A and have an NCAA-style tournament, with games played in neutral site cities (prefrably ones with domes and/or warm weather. I'll write about how I would do it in a column soon.
