My 2007 Preseason College Football Picks

17

by Confessions Of A Fanatic

This is my first article on here, as I just came over from blogspot. I posted this a couple of days ago, so I figured I'd lead off with it at the new home of my blog, armchairgm.

I know it's early to be talking college football, but well, everyone else is, so I figured, why not?

This won't be my last visit to the subject either. Around early August, expect a conference-by-conference breakdown of teams, bowl picks, and notable players. For today, we'll just be taking a glance at my predicted Top 25, plus some teams who may challenge that order.

2007 College Football Preseason Top 25

1. Southern California Trojans (PAC-10, 1)

2. West Virginia Mountaineers (Big East, 1)

3. Michigan Wolverines (Big Ten, 1)

4. Louisiana State Tigers (SEC, 1)

5. Florida Gators (SEC, 2)

6. Texas Longhorns (Big XII, 1)

7. Virginia Tech Hokies (ACC, 1)

8. Louisville Cardinals (Big East, 2)

9. Wisconsin Badgers (Big Ten, 2)

10. Ohio State Buckeyes (Big Ten, 3)

11. Oklahoma Sooners (Big XII, 2)

12. California-Los Angeles Bruins (PAC-10, 2)

13. Auburn Tigers (SEC, 3)

14. California Golden Bears (PAC-10, 3)

15. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (Big East, 3)

16. Penn State Nittany Lions (Big Ten, 4)

17. Nebraska Cornhuskers (Big XII, 3)

18. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (WAC, 1)

19. Tennessee Volunteers (SEC, 4)

20. Georgia Bulldogs (SEC, 5)

21. Texas A&M Aggies (Big XII, 4)

22. Arkansas Razorbacks (SEC, 6)

23. Clemson Tigers (ACC, 2)

24. Arizona State Sun Devils (PAC-10, 4)

25. Florida State Seminoles (ACC, 3)

On the Outisde Looking In, For the Moment: Boise State Broncos (WAC, 2), Oregon Ducks (PAC-10, 5), Texas-Christian Horned Frogs (Mountain West, 1), Brigham Young Cougars (Mountain West, 2), Oregon State Beavers (PAC-10, 6)

I'll agree with your comment about USC, Prophet. That team is just too talented to pick against. As far as Michigan goes, I just don't like how the Wolverines ended last year, and think it may be indicative of things to come this season. Not to say that Michigan will not be successful, as I did put them 3rd in my poll, but I just think that they are not the team to face USC in the National Championship Game.

LSU is supposed to have a National Championship type year this year and they are being projected as #2 right now. Which 2 or more teams do u have them losing to? as losing more than 1 will knock them out of the Nat'l champ spot

Arkansas, Va. Tech, Florida, and Alabama all interest me, as does the South Carolina game. Out of all those, they could lose one, maybe two before the SEC Championship game. Matt Flynn has some big shoes to fill, and how fast he adjusts to his role as the starting quarterback will decide the success of the team.

LSU will make it to the national championship. Their defense will be not only tops in the SEC, but also 1st in the nation. Eight returning starters, including Dorsey and Jackson means hell for opposing ball carriers. As for USC as the number 1 pick, there is just something that makes me feel iffy about them. WVU will have a nice path to make it to the 'ship, however I feel Michigan will make it with all their experience. As for that Penn State comment, c'mon your quarterback is Anthony Morelli still.

This list is beyond ridiculous. Auburn ahead of Cal? UCLA at 12? West Virginia at 2? Michigan at 3? Come on now, let's get serious. I know everybody likes to make crazy preseason predictions on the off chance that they'll come true, but at least be reasonable. Hawaii won't lose a single game, yet you have them at 18, care to explain that? I don't mind you posting your rankings, but at least make them informed opinions.

Ok just because Colt Mcbrennan is a great QB, doesnt mean his team is, its ridiculous to have Hawaii in the top 25, instead you should have University of Oregon in it.

Dear Anonymous Fan, if you're going to try and make a point, let us know who you are.

Hawaii will go undefeated, I won't argue that, but their schedule is a joke. You obviously didn't bother to look at it. The Warriors face TWO Division I Playoff Subdivision (formerly 1-AA, if you weren't aware) schools, and only one team from a BCS conference in Washington, and that's a home game. As far as the rest of your "points", none of them really carry any weight. Almost every poll has Michigan and West Virginia somewhere between 2 and 5, so my picks are not as farfetched as you propose. UCLA was predicted to be anywhere between 11 and 25 by different sources, and Auburn is ahead of Cal because they play in the best conference in the nation in the SEC.

There's the facts. I know you won't be back to defend yourself on this one, but maybe have some information on hand next time.

Cal should clearly be ranked ahead of UCLA. True most polls have the Bruins in the 25, but usually in the upper 20s. And Cal's offensive pieces (DeSean what's his name?) will outplay UCLA's supposed defensive mastery of USC. Plus, check out the bowl game results: Cal's blowout win over Texas A&M, UCLA's blowout loss to FSU. Oregon State had a tremendously solid finish and should be ranked higher, at least finishing 5th in the PAC-10 (Did you see the comeback win against Mizzou?). And Boise State as unranked? When they finished last season in the top 5 AND garnered a number 1 vote to prevent Florida from being a unanimous number one at the end of the season? Granted they're losing the overrated Jared Zabransky to the cover of NCAA 08 and a Canadian Football career, but that's all. I don't care how high you are on Colt Brennan. Put them in your preseason 25, because you're the only poll that's going to leave them off. And who did you expect to finish second in the ACC? Because you either forgot them or labeled Clemson 3rd instead of 2nd.

Thank you for pointing out that slight error on the ACC thing, it was much appreciated.

Honestly, I think we will see a hard-fought battle between Cal and UCLA for the second spot in the PAC-10. Either team could be in that position come bowl season, so my pick of UCLA is just my preseason perception. As for your complaint about Boise State, you will find that I am actually quite fond of Boise State, especially last year's team. I wanted Boise State to take a share of the National Championship last year, because I feel they earned it. This season, I feel they will be very good again, but I think they're looking at a 10-2 regular season and a second-place finish in the WAC. One of those losses will be to Hawaii, my pick as the undefeated champion of the WAC for 2007. I am not a huge Colt Brennan fan at all, as you suggest, but I see that team succeeded with him under center this year, as he is a "product of the system" QB. Their schedule is also a joke, another reason why they'll go undefeated.

O, and P.S.- The Sporting News also leaves Boise State off of their poll, so thanks for missing that detail.

You are all wrong the badgers will take everything this year PJ hill, travis Beckum, Paul Hubbard, Luke Swan, and 4/5 of the offensive line not onlly a great ground game but will be able to air it out long. On defense 3/4 of the dline back in action as well as play makers like Jack Ikegwuonu, De andre Levy, and the furios John Casillas. TWo words National Champions.

You have Oklahoma too low. But I guess ranking them 11 and not having a QB that has played says a lot about the whole team. If the QB is fair OU should be up around 4 or 5. If they have a GOOD QB then I would say #1 or 2. Of course if they have a great QB, well...they are unstoppable. I think the Hogs are way to low also, those Arkansans :) are fighters and I think they will surprise people again this year.

people need to stop looking at past college football programs and start looking at todays up and coming teams. Also the schedules play an important role in determining who will be the top two teams this year. USC, LSU, UF, CAL, OREGON, and even OKLAHOMA have very difficult schedules. With Ohio state, hawaii, USF, and others already being highly ranked and having a fairly cake schedules left look for them to be in top 5. I dont believe you will see USF in the nc game because they are not known, even if they should go undefeated. I think they should be there playing atleast 5 top ranked teams. But i think a guarantee is ohio in the nc game having a fairly easy schedule.
