Mr. Desperate Makes Another Desperate Move

Compare these two PF's stats:

Player A: 21 pts 4.5 assists 12.5 reb’s 1.5 blocks 48-50% FG 80% FT

Player B: 16 pts 1.3 assists 11 reb’s 1.5 blocks 50% FG 68% FT

Now, player A is clearly better. He scores 5 more points a game, hands out about 3 more assists and grabs an extra 1.5 rebounds a game. If i asked you which player you wanted, you have to take player A. However what if i told you player B is 22, the same age as many college grads and was entering his fourth year in the NBA, while player B is 31 and entering his 13th year in the league. What if i also told you, player A's salary for the upcoming year is $21 million and player B's is $1.7 million. What if i also told you i was giving away another young inexpensive talent with player B to get player A? would you do it?

Of course these players are Kevin Garnett and Al Jefferson and the Boston Celtics are about to make another mistake this offseason. Apparently Danny Ainge feels it's time to cash in his chips and make a run for it. He's been stock piling young assets and waiting for the right opportunity to turn them into quality talent. Apparently now is that time for Ainge, most likely since he knows if he waits any longer he'll be shown the door. So feeling the heat he's gone out and traded for Ray Allen and is close to acquiring KG. This move would officially end the youth movement with Jefferson, and possibly Green or Rondo going to Minnesota. It would also instantly turn the Celtics a favorite to win the eastern conference the next 2-3 years.

However when Allen turns 35 before the start of the 2009 season and they're paying him 18 mil in the last year of his contract, they'll also be paying Pierce and KG 20 mil a piece at ages 32 and 33 respectively where does that leave the team? Jefferson, Corey Brewer, West, Green and Rondo will still not have reached their prime and you'll have two over the hill guards and an aging KG. Everyone knows guards don't age well. Here's the list of guys playing over the age of 31 who are guards and play anything but a complimentary role for their teams: Kidd, Nash, Iverson and that's it. All those guys are uniquely talented players, who have defied the odds to stay productive at an age over 31 and there's still only 3 of them.

If I'm a Celtics fan and this trade happens i pray they win a championship in the next 2-3 years because they're going to most likely be one of the worst teams in the league for years to come after that.

I'm a huge Al Jefferson guy and I cannot understand what would motivate Ainge to deal him for KG. Yeah, KG's better right now, but Jefferson's talent, along with his age and salary make him doubly attractive. Boston should NOT make this trade!

If they keep jefferson, then he will enter his prime during the twilight of Pierce and Allen's career. Big Al will be stuck without much talent and Boston will suffer. Ainge's best hope is to grow a pair and make this deal. Boston won't see an opportunity like this anytime soon, you can be sure of that.

Pierce and Allen are going to be entering the twilight of their careers in a year or two regardless of whether KG is there or not, keep big Al and at least you have something to build around when they're gone. Not to mention someone who will contribute right now.

This is a terrible deal. The goal of a team should be to win a title, not to "be relevant." This won't win them the title now, and it screws them in the long term.

If this goes through, they are 100% a contender next season. If they keep Jefferson that makes them a favorite. They could go head-to-head any team in the NBA with a lineup of Rondo, Allen, Pierce, Jefferson and KG. You'd be crazy NOT to make this deal if you're Boston. It's a chance to not just be relevant, its a chance to win a freaking title. How do you not do this trade?

Ray Allen is already in the twilight of his career. He's 32 and coming off surgeries on both Ankles.

Bone Spur Surgery...not that big of a deal...there was a lot of conjecture in boston about it, most of it disuaded by the fact that the surgery was not major in any way...just a relief of discomfort...he'll be fine...

You missed the AND to that statement. as in hes 32 AND coming off surgeries. 32 year olds decline rapidly in this league regardless of injury. Throw in the injuries minor or not and I'd be awfully worried.

I think this is a good deal for the Celtics. The East is a weak conference in general, and Pierce-Allen by itself is a playoff team. Add in KG, and it's a true force. That team is much, much better than the Cavs, and matches up well against all Eastern teams. It also can handle the Western teams decently well. In a best-of-7, they can beat any other team. Maybe they won't beat them 6 times out of 10 series, but they'd certainly do it often enough to be a true contender. It's a two year window. Maybe three. And in three years, you blow it up and start over again -- fine. But for now, you have hope. And it's real.

I think the Celts need to try a year with Allen and Pierce and see how that works before adding yet another superstar ego to the mix. Why not see what they already have with two big names and all their young talent before destroying the team five years down the road by getting rid of the future base it's taken them so long to build?

KG a superstar ego? He's one of the most unselfish offensive players in the NBA. Add on the fact that he'll be on a team that looks like it has the talent to contend in the East, and I think ego will not be a problem. Decent deal for both teams... the Celtics had to do something to try and win now, and the TWolves get some nice pieces for the future.

If Garnett is all about "superstar ego" then I guess that means Kobe Bryant is the "ultimate team guy". Geez...

He's not a traditional superstar ego like Kobe or Pierce, but anyone that good wants the ball. Three guys wanting the ball all the time doesn't work.

Since when does Pierce have a superstar ego? By that I take it that you mean Pierce is selfish. I think you need to watch a few more Celtics games to understand what type of player he is. I know that if you do not live in the New England area, then you really have not watched him very much because they are never on national television.

I watch him and cpcp is right. He wants the ball. He's as much of a team palyer as Kobe is. Sure he'll have some assists, but that doesn't mean he doesn;t want the ball. There's going to be problems trying to figure whos taking what shot between him, Allen, and Garnett.

Yeah, every star player wants the ball. You also have to understand that all three are gamers, and all three are extremely hungry to get to the NBA finals. They will make it work.

This automatically makes the Celtics contenders again and returns the greatest NBA franchise of all time to elite status once again.

Woah calm down. They just gave up half their team for KG. You have 3 30-year-olds who all think they can still play trying to coexist and win. Of course they'll make the playoffs but other than that, they don't have a shot. Like John Hollinger said, this is a more glorified version of the Washington Wizards. I say they'll get eliminated in the Eastern Semi's.

No way...they could absolutely win the East...I would be willing to take the Cs over the Cavs, Pistons or Heat in a 7 game series...all bets are off in the finals...

I love the deal for both teams. Minnesota gets young and gets a future. Boston gets a trio of players they can win with now and for about a 3-4 year window. Further out than that and it gets shaky, but the Eastern Conference is THIN and a trio of Ray Allen, KG and Paul Pierce IS enough to go deep into the playoffs with. Time will tell.
