Moving Willis by Deadline Makes No Sense

Ken Rosenthal can be an idiot. Today, he wrote an article about how Dontrelle Willis should be traded. Here's his brilliant logic:

"Willis, 24, will appeal not just to the losers of the Roger Clemens sweepstakes, but also to any surprise team that wants to maintain its early momentum with a midseason blockbuster.
For example, what if the Reds offered a package including third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and top pitching prospect Homer Bailey?"

So let me get this straight Ken? The Marlins should trade Willis, a proven big league pitcher who finished second in the NL in CY Young voting for more offense and an speculative pitcher who will probably take 2-3 more years to be big league ready. That's not smart, let me outline why.

First, Willis has got the good to deliver cheaply for the next two years. The Marlins might stink this year, but next year they should be decent and the year after, if things progress decently, that they should be able to make a run at the playoffs.

Second, the Marlins have a decent core of solid hitters: Miguel Cabrera, Josh Willingham, Jeremy Hermida, Hanley Ramirez, and Mike Jacobs should develop into a pretty solid offense. Why do they need Edwin Encarnacion? I'll wait for that answer.

Third, the Marlins pitching stinks just about as much as your article. Besides Willis, there isn't much major league ready talent. True, the Marlins got Yusmeiro Petit when they traded Carlos Delgado, but people question how he'll fair in the big-leagues. Who else do they have Ken?

So, the Marlins should trade Dontrelle for a speculative starter and more offense. Thank god your not a general manager. I, however, am an ArmchairGM and will continue to point out your stupid columns.

Rosenthal is one of the better baseball writers out there, and he has a valid point regarding Willis. He's in for a huge payday well before the Fish will have cash. And the Marlins MO is to have everyone hit arb all at once, and then go through a massive purge.

Trading Willis will do more than just get them two prospects. It will also clear the $10m Willis will be due in a few months off the (speculative) books. This is money they can use, when the time is right, to sign a free agent who can replace 80% of Willis' production. Plus, he doesn't have to be a pitcher (although I'd suggest it, for the reasons you said above).

Rosenthal's biggest mistake is putting a 3B on the trade-bait list. Cabrera wants to be at 3B and *should* be at 3B. But if it were two pitchers or a guy like Lastings Milledge, suddenly, it's a pretty interesting problem for the Fish.

Bullshit. The Marlins are building for the future. If they trade for minor league pitchers or other minor league players, they won't have the staff to do anything during the next three years because by the time that talent developes they will lose all of their current offensive talent and they will continue to suck.

It could be a huge payday? It will be a stupid move for the organization, ensuring that they continue to field a below average team. That in the long run will lose them money, fans, respect.

They've already lost fans and respect, and they get more revenue sharing money than they have incentive to spend.

If they trade Willis for prospects, they will only lose more. First, he's the face of the organization. Second, the move for the above reason makes no sense. Just because they are poorly run now, doesn't mean that they should be poorly run in the future.

Isn't is possible that they want to continue to gut the team so they can move out of Florida and when they move to their new state (Texas?) they players they have been grooming will be developed. And as for Encarnacion, I would Assume that Rosenthal is guessing that after the Marlins trade Willis, Cabrera is next.

If the Marlins want to do that (although I think its horrible from a baseball standpoint), that's fine, but I'm not going to sit back and listen to Kenny's nonsense.

Florida did offer Dontrelle Willis for David Wright straight up so apparently they are looking for a 3B for whatever reason.

I read somewhere that those rumors were false. . .

Could be...it wouldn't be the first time I read something on ESPN that turned out to be false.
