Most Overrated NBA Player?

14
Vote

by user DNL

I'm hearing from a lot of Net fans that the team should let Vince Carter walk. We all know that AI made the Sixers better by leaving, and that Stephon Marbury, as a shoot-first PG, takes losing with him wherever he goes.

Is one of these three the most overrated NBA player? If not, who is?

AI also took a team to the finals that consisted of Eric Snow, Larry Hughes, Dikembe Mutumbo, Matt Geiger and the likes...over rated...yeah right... Maybe not the most over rated, but Who is Kobe Bryant w/o Shaq?

To answer your qustion, he is a guy who can still average 30-35 ppg with a running mate in Smush Parker and Kwame Brown.

And do what..the same thing Allen Iverson did...

If Kobe is...rated (I guess)...does that mean that IVerson is too...

How about Baron Davis?

Sadly, I can apply the same argument to KG and LeBron...I think baron Davis is a bit overrated...DNL is right on about Starbury (although 15 dollar sneakers are pretty friggin' cool)...VC is a dunk artist but really not all that great...bill simmons will claim that Nowitski may in fact be overrated...Ben Wallace, especially this year appears to be overrated

I think people underestimate Stephon Marbury, sure when he's bad he's putrid, but given the right situation he could be dominant again. And he's very misunderstood.

Allen Iverson is clearly not what he once was, but more of what he is than ever at the same time. He's still one of the top 15 (tied at #4) or so players on the planet (After #1-3, the next dozen players are all tied)

Half Man - Half a Season is not a basketball player. He is a freek athlete that plays basketball for a living.

How about... for OVERrated look at Bruce Bowen, Robert Horry, Brent Barry, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and anyone on the San Antonio Yankees, I mean Spurs...

Go Jazz!!!

Bitter manny? I'll agree with Ginobili, who btw, Horry said was the best european player in the NBA a few years ago (which would be fine, if Ginobili was european)... But overall, none of those players is considerably rated...only known because they play on championship teams...sorta like how people know who shane spencer or ricky ledee was...

And for all his crap (maybe because of all his crap), Bowen is still the best one-on-one defender in the NBA. You know who's overrated, though? Carmelo Anthony. Joe Johnson. Ray Allen.

Yes, Yes, No...Ray Allen doesn't miss...He really shouldn't be the centerpiece of a team (sorta like Baron Davis), but he's nasty... Bowen is dirty...but he'll shut anyone down any way he can...if its grit and dirt he gives you, take it

Well, I agree, as a one-dimensional shooter Allen is great. But you said it yourself, he shouldn't be the centerpiece of a team... and yet people view him that way. To me, that's what overrated means.

I would absolutly use 'great' to discribe Grant Hill's first 6-7 years in the league. His stats were akin to Kobe's but he played a much sounder game. Its too bad the next two best players on those Piston teams were Lindsey Hunter and an aged Joe Dumars. With a center and a point guard... if only...

son of a... I thought I said Ben Wallace too. WAAAAAY overrated. Overpaid and got his team to lose to the team he was brought in to help tip the scales and surpass. You can't say his offensive doesn't hurt his overall stock. Plus he's a putrid free throw shooter.

I will never forgive him as the escalator in the "Incident". If he doesn't throw the towel (or at least get tossed right there) no one throws anything else at Artest. Wallace started the whole ordeal into an incident. Artest backed away. Ben Wallace is a punk and kharma sent him to rot the Bulls franchise... tick tick tick

He's on the serious downside of his career and will handcuff the Bulls until Isaih Thomas trades for him....

I took a look at the All-Star teams for both leagues and based upon production this season I came up with a list, granted most of these guys missed games. Shaq, Joe Johnson, Jermaine O'Neal, Caron Butler, Ray Allen, Iverson, Yao) Guys who played better than these All-Stars included (Jason Terry, Elton Brand, Manu, Deng, Kevin Martin, Heinrich, Barbosa, and Chris Paul).

Uh, Kobe is still pretty awesome without Shaq. His team just sucks. I agree with the greatest over-rated player being Larry Bird. Steve Nash comes to mind as being much too highly rated. He is a very good player. But he has played with some really talented teams, and has never made the Finals.

The most overrated player in the league... thats a big question, K-Mart has recieved some big contracts and shown little ability beyond getting hurt...Vince Carter is just a #2, and that is all he will ever be. Im starting to wonder about Yao though, he may be the next on that list.

As a Sixers fan, I would actually nominate Allen Iverson as one of the most overrated players in the NBA. Yes, as an indidviual player, he is great. To win in the NBA, however, requires a team effort. AI never understood that. Hence, his full potential never came close to being realized. Ergo, AI is one of the most overrated players in the NBA.

I'm not sure what AI's "full potential" within a team context would be, though. His value isn't in shooting efficiently, or distributing, or playing defense (except for the steals)... It's in his unique ability to create loads of shots and to carry an offense without totally destroying it. If anybody else tries to shoot as much as him, they're horrible, but AI's gift is that he can maintain a decent level of efficiency despite the huge workload, taking pressure off of his teammates and allowing them to take better shots. But I'm not sure he'd be more efficient if he took fewer shots, and I know the Sixers teams he was on would suffer if he took fewer shots because he was surrounded by a bunch of guys who couldn't create shots. I guess my point is that he kind of reached his potential when he led that team to the Finals in 2001 -- it was a team perfectly designed to suit his game (a bunch of guys that worried about defense and let AI carry the burden on offense). And I'm not sure AI could function any better if he shared the ball more in a team effort.

What about Lebron James? Who is consistant only in his poor end game decisions. He has all the tools to be great, but he only utilizes them sometimes. Some games I wonder whether he flips a coin every morning to decide whether he wants to play defense on that given day. He'll get better though. Ben Wallace
