I've had many discussions about it this season, but I've never had any discussions about it here. I'd like to hear from you guys what the most overrated team and most underrated teams are. Some of the teams that have been said for overrated teams are the Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Braves, and Brewers, and for underrated teams, people have mentioned the Mariners, Twins, Angels, Phillies, and Diamondbacks.
Here are my thoughts:
Underrated
I believe that the Phillies and Mariners are definitely the most underrated teams in baseball today. I'll talk about the Phillies first. The Phillies haven't been talked about since they were in last place; they were even behind the Nationals at one point in time. Everyone is talking about how the Braves definitely have a chance for the division, when the truth is that they're falling apart. I believe that the Phillies definitely have a hot streak going on. They were what? 10 games behind the Mets or something? Now they're only 3 games back. Someone knows better than me about that. Their offense is doing great, as they are the only team in the National League to score over 400 runs; the second is the Marlins with 384. I also think they have the best shot at the wild card because as the NL West keeps battling it out against each other, the Phillies will just keep on rolling and make it with a better winning percentage than the two NL West Wild Card contenders who will be eliminated.
I've heard about how the Rangers are extremely bad this year, I've heard about the race between the A's and Angels, but the truth is there is also another team that is in second place who is getting no recognition, and that team is none other than the Seattle Mariners. Ever since Jeff Weaver got off the disabled list, they have been on fire! They are only 5 games behind the team that has the second best winning percentage in baseball, and the most wins in the MLB: the Angels. They are on a five game winning streak right now as they swept the Red Sox and the Angels got swept by the Kansas City Royals. Ichiro has probably the hottest bat in the league, Richie Sexson has been making progress on average, Kenji Johjima's doing well, and J.J. Putz has not blown a save yet and he is having a "2006 Jonathan Papelbon" first half. His ERA is under 1.00 and is definitely a strong candidate for best closer this year. It seems like they are a better challenger for the AL West than the Oakland Athletics right now. They're also only 2.5 games behing the Cleveland Indians, and are in second place right now, for being the Wild Card to go to the Playoffs, which is really great for the clubhouse. I think they've really got it going well this year.
Overrated
Now it's time to talk about the most overrated team. In my opinion, it has to be the Yankees. Right now, they are third in the AL East, and they're getting more talk than the Blue Jays (who are second in the AL East) about how many games they are behind the Red Sox. Besides the last game against the Orioles that will be continued later, the Yankees have lost four games in a row, and are getting further and further away from the New York Yankees. They are now 11 games behind the Red Sox, even though the Red Sox got swept against the Mariners. All we have been hearing in the offseason was about where Roger Clemens was going to go, and he decided to go to New York. He hasn't really been helping the team, as he is now 1-3 with an ERA of over 5.00. They have a good offense, but their bullpen has been horrible. They are also 4-13 in 1 run games, which is absolutely ridiculous for a team that they have. Now, I'm not saying that they are a team that shouldn't be defeated, I'm just saying that with the money that they have, they should at least be strong contenders for first place.
Now, I'd also like to make another point about the Yankees. They're considered the underdogs now. Remember when the Yankees were about 12 games behind after the All-Star break last year? They did extremely well after that. Sure, some of it had to do with the Red Sox injuries, but they did extremely well, and it was probably over when the Yanks swept the Sawx in the five game series. My point is that I'm not counting the Yankees out, never mind the Blue Jays. Both of them can still be contenders for first place, but A-Rod needs help. It takes nine men to win a baseball game, at least. If the Yankees work together and win more games, then the Yankees can probably being a contender for the Wild Card are 8.5 back in the Wild Card. Unless the Red Sox's team chemistry is bad or if they go through a really bad week/month, then the Yanks/Blue Jays might have a chance to win it.
