More K's than Hits

Since Bob Gibson's single-season dominance forced the lowering of the pitcher's mound, there have been 14 offensive players who have had more career strikeouts than hits (minimum 4000 AB). Three of those are currently active: Jim Thome, Jose Hernandez, Mike Cameron. Only one is a Hall-of-Famer: Reggie Jackson. Four have 400 or more home runs: Jackson (563), Thome (450), Dave Kingman (442), and Jose Canseco (462). One is an admitted steroid user: guess who. All are pretty recognizable names.
Here's the list (statistics through May 31, 2006):
| Name | K's | Hits | Ratio | HR |
| Gorman Thomas | 1339 | 1051 | 1.274 | 268 |
| Pete Incaviglia | 1277 | 1043 | 1.224 | 206 |
| Jose Hernandez | 1359 | 1135 | 1.197 | 166 |
| Mickey Tettleton | 1307 | 1132 | 1.155 | 245 |
| Dave Kingman | 1816 | 1575 | 1.153 | 442 |
| Mike Cameron | 1240 | 1114 | 1.113 | 174 |
| Jay Buhner | 1406 | 1273 | 1.105 | 310 |
| Dean Palmer | 1332 | 1229 | 1.084 | 275 |
| Jim Thome | 1816 | 1719 | 1.056 | 450 |
| Jose Canseco | 1942 | 1877 | 1.035 | 462 |
| Greg Vaughn | 1513 | 1475 | 1.026 | 355 |
| Jesse Barfield | 1234 | 1219 | 1.012 | 241 |
| Reggie Jackson | 2597 | 2584 | 1.005 | 563 |
| Cecil Fielder | 1316 | 1313 | 1.002 | 319 |
What I find most interesting is that two of the active players (Hernandez and Cameron) have among the highest ratios and the fewest home runs, proving to me that the talent pool is a little more watered down these days. At least Cameron has a great glove.
