Today began the Kellen Clemens era at Giants Stadium, as he made his second career start for the New York Jets in today's game against the Washington Redskins. It was clear that a difference was made as far as the emotion that the Jets played with today. The result was the same scen we have seen for weeks as the Jets fell to the Redskins 23-20 in overtime.
The Jets came out with emotion right from the get-go. Leon Washington opened the game with an 86 yard kickoff return for a TD, setting a team record and becoming only the 11th player in NFL history to runback 3 kickoffs for a TD in a season. Later on, Kellen Clemens hit Joe Kowalewski with a 2 yard TD pass, Kowalewski's first career TD, extending the lead to 17-3.
From here, the Jets returned to old form, moving the ball between the 20s, but not having much success going any deeper. The only serious drive they had ended in a Jerricho Cotchery fumble with 13:55 left in the fourth quarter, which led to the Clinton Portis go-ahead TD. They were able to muster a tying scoring drive with 10 seconds left in the game, but ended up losing in OT, when Suisham hit from 46 yards out with 7:43 left in the extra period.
All in all, Kellen Clemens did an effective job, finishing 23-42, for 226 yards and 1 TD. He added an element of mobility that didn't exist with Chad Pennington under center. He was able to move within the pocket to create plays downfield, as well as scramble when necessary, running 7 times for 48 yards. However, the same result ensued, early points by the Jets and then a stalling offense which led to a come from behind victory for the Jets opponents.
