More BS from BS247...

Greetings from sunny (and ungodly hot…heat index of 110 today) Isle of Palms! I didn’t know this resort had wireless access! I thought all of the satellites had melted…Seriously, I’m sweating like R. Kelly at recess. But let’s forget about my biological problems and focus on some recent sports issues…

National Sports News

Tim Donaghy: His recent guilty plea really makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Not only did he plead guilty to betting on NBA games in general, he betted on NBA games that he officiated…what does that say about the NBA’s integrity? Look, I know he is the only one connected to this particular case, but for David Stern to say that this is an isolated incident is hogwash.  Lopsided betting occurs in all sports, not just basketball. Perhaps that’s why there hasn’t been a severe public backlash against the NBA…everyone knows what’s going on, they just don’t want to admit it.

Michael Vick : Boy is this guy neck deep in dog poo…thank you, I’ll be here all week, try the veal…but in all seriousness, who expected three of his homies to dime him out? I didn’t… at first glance, this seemed to be an open and shut case…Vick would pay a fine and would make a “heart-filled” public apology. I believed all of that nonsense until I read his indictment. And now with three of his cronies ready and waiting to give him up in return for a lessened jail sentence, it looks like Vick’s prison term will be measured in years; not months or weeks. And that’s the way it should be. I’m sick of celebrities being given the short term in a fake jail. It’s nice to see Vick has not been given the Paris Hilton treatment.

Rick Ankiel : How refreshing is it to have a national sports story that we can all stand up and cheer about with all the bad things going on in sports today? Even Cubs fans have to love the story of a recently-forgotten pitching prospect turned next-year All-Star shoe-in (if he continues to play at this level). He’s not only doing it with the bat, but he has played some great defense in right field for the Cards. This is the feel-good story of the year in sports…maybe Lifetime will make a movie out of it.

Local Sports News

Matt Weiters : Thank you, Jesus. The Orioles have finally done the right thing. They have invested money in a solid draft pick that will not only bolster their minor league system, but give them a sure thing down the road. If Weiters didn’t sign, there would have been arson at the Warehouse. Maybe Angelos really has handed the reigns to MacPhail….only time will tell…

Oh, and as a quick side note, the O’s once again showed their domination of the Yankees in the Bronx earlier this week…I don’t care if we finish 12-160 (ok, yeah, I’d care), as long as those 12 wins are against the Yankees, it’s something to smile about. It goes on to prove my point that I made in earlier articles that you cannot simply hit your way into October…you need pitching, and the Yanks don’t have what the Mariners and Indians possess in that category.

RAVENS!!! : Football season has officially arrived. After viewing training camp first hand and then seeing the Purple City Bird Gang embarrass the McNabbless Eagles (sorry, Justin), hopes are high in Charm City…not only for a playoff appearance, but for a shot at the Lombardi Trophy. The Ravens have to leapfrog a lot of good teams in the AFC, but they have the mentality and talent to do so. I can’t wait for the Monday Night premiere against the Bengals.

As of Sunday, I’ll be up in Old Lyme, CT (about 700 miles from where I am now)…maybe I’ll hit you guys up again…hugs and hand-pounds.

-Alex

Great commentary on the Donaghy situation. I agree that every intelligent sports fan know about the magnitude of gambling in sports, but the league's can't afford to acknowledge it.

I'm bummed about Weiters. I was hoping he wouldn't sign, he'd go back in the draft and the Red Sox would grab him. They need a young catcher like I need air.

One quick note, Ankiel is playing RF for the Cards, as Chris Duncan is entrenched in left, and as a Cubs fan, no, we don't have to love the story. All we have to love is that the Cards swept the Brewers, and now come to Wrigley with the pitching matchups tilted in our favor for a very important four game set.

Ankiel is the story of this entire season, hands down. To even be able to come back from that sort of massive embarassment (albeit at another position) is awesome.

There's all this talk about how Ankiel made his return, but no one, except for a very few amount of people, are talking about how the Cardinals are now in playoff contention. The last time they were 3 1/2 games back was about 4 months ago, back when they just got their 10th win. I still don't think they're going anywhere, but hey... you wanna talk surprising? First it was the Brewers, then the Cubs, NOW it's the division and World Series reigning Cardinals.

While I am grudgingly impressed that the Cards have made a run, it is more due to the sputtering of Chicago and Milwaukee then a big resurgence by STL. The Cards roster has not vastly improved. Scott Spiezio checked into rehab. Rolen, Edmonds, and Encarnacion still haven't hit for power. They have a revolving door at 2B. Their rotation is laced with castoffs and ex relievers. They have surged because the bats have gotten hot, but that will not go on forever. Sooner or later, you need pitching to carry you, and the Cards don't have it.

Good article capturing some of the week's goings-on. I do wonder where the assumption comes from that the Yankees don't have pitching. Baltimore took 2 of 3 from a team which had won 10 out of 12 games prior to that. Baltimore has had the number of both the Yankees and the Sox this year for sure. But coming down the stretch the Indians (who are division leaders) are ranked 13 overall, with the Yankees ranked 14 and Seattle ranked 20th. Add Edwar Ramirez, Joba, and Hughes getting regular innings, and the arms are on the Yankees side.

Not too concerned about that eagles game...int he post-game press conference, Andy Reid practically admitted he didn't gameplan what-so-ever... He did against the panthers...you could tell
