More 'Bad Newz' for Vick

Michael Vick is back in the news, and it is definitely "bad newz." The Commonwealth Attorney of Surrey County in Virginia has decided to proceed with a grand jury and potentially an indictment of Michael Vick on state criminal charges. Vick's plea to federal conspiracy charges made it clear that he was involved in the execution of dogs. In Virginia, animal cruelty is punishable by up to 5 years in prison, and by his own admission, Vick is guilty of 6 to 8 counts. And those aren't the only crimes with which he could be charged. Dog fighting is also a crime in Virginia. No one knows at this point how many counts of that he could be charged with.
If there was any doubt about it, Michael Vick's career in the NFL is through. Chances are very good that he will now face jail time in Virginia after he finishes serving whatever sentence he is given in Federal Court. The Atlanta Falcons need to be looking to their future. Joey Harrington is not that future. Neither is Byron Leftwich. Right now, they appear to be the odds-on favorite to have the first pick in the draft. They will almost certainly have a high pick which will allow them to pick a potential franchise quarterback. While the coaching staff still needs to focus on the remainder of this season, Arthur Blank needs to hire some background checkers to look into all the potential top quarterbacks in the 2008 draft. The Falcons can't afford to make another mistake like Michael Vick.
