The Montreal Alouettes went into Canad Inns Stadium to face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the undisputed claim of first place in the East Division of the CFL. This was a battle between the top two defenses, Montreal #1 and Winnipeg #2. On a hot (98 degree F), humid day the teams waged a defensive battle in front of 28,131 fans. The still unbeaten Alouettes defeated the Bombers, by the lopsided score of 44-16.

The #1 Montreal defense has yielded only 55 points in the first half and a ridiculously low 4 points in the second half this season. This defense was in full-force as it held the Bomber offense to their lowest scoring output of the young season. They also had two quarterback sacks and forced three turnovers.

Montreal got on the board first on a 40-yard field goal from K/P Damon Duval early in the first quarter.

On the first play of Winnipeg's first series, QB Kevin Glenn threw a 75-yard bomb to WR Chris Brazzell for an early touchdown and a lead against the top defense.

For the rest of the first quarter, it was a defensive show by both teams. Both quarterbacks were being hurried and knocked down as the defenses showed their muscles. At the end of the first, the score stood at Bombers 7 - Alouettes 3.

Winnipeg was able to muster a drive that started at the end of the first quarter and finished in the second with a 27-yard field goal from K Troy Westwood. Montreal was able to answer with a 41-yard field goal from Duval. On the following series, Glenn was intercepted by LB Kai Ellis. This turnover was converted into another Duval field goal of 42 yards.

The following Winnipeg series ended in a punt that pinned the Alouettes on their own 7-yard line. Montreal was unable to do anything on the series. And conceded a safety when Duval ran the ball out of the back of the end-zone. Winnipeg was able to add another field goal in the next series off of the foot of Westwood from 38 yards.

Montreal took over the ball on their own 35-yard line with just 1 minute 05 seconds to go in the half. Montreal moved the ball but had to punt. But, the team used a little used rule to retake the ball deep in Winnipeg territory. On the punt, Montreal lined up a man behind and to the left of the punter, Duval. Because he was behind the punter, he was allowed to recover the ball when it hit the ground after the punt. HB Clint Kent was already on the run when he passed Duval on the punt, he then recovered the ball on the Winnipeg 29 before going out of bounds. Montreal took over from there. Montreal made several attempts at the end-zone and finally converted a major on a 1-yard run by FB Mike Vilimek at the end of the quarter.

At the half, the score was Winnipeg 15 - Montreal 16.

In the third quarter, the Montreal defense came out of the locker room, while the Winnipeg defense...well who knows.

Montreal scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run by QB Anthony Calvillo and again on a 6-yard pass to SB Thyron Anderson. Meanwhile the Winnipeg offense could do nothing against the stingy Montreal defense. At the end of the quarter Winnipeg 15 - Montreal 30.

It was more of the same for Montreal in the fourth, scoring two more touchdowns. First on a 14-yard pass to RB Robert Edwards, then on 6-yard pass to Edwards.

Winnipeg was only able to score a single when a Duval punt bounced out of the side of the end-zone.

Not all of the fault lies in the Winnipeg defense, nor does all of the praise go to the Montreal offense. The game was rife with horrible calls by the referee team. All day long the ref squad made bad calls, even when those calls were aided by replay. The unedited, non-delayed feed from CBC captured many f-bombs and one finger salutes from the Winnipeg bench.

Final stat leaders Winnipeg. QB Kevin Glenn was 14 of 28 for 262 yards with one touchdown and one interception. RB Graeme Bell had 8 rushes for 43 yards and 0 touchdowns. WR Andrae Thurman had 6 receptions for 91 yards and 0 touchdowns. K Troy Westwood was 2/2 on field goals and 1/1 on extra points.

Final stat leaders Montreal. QB Anthony Calvillo was 27 of 45 for 261 yards with 3 touchdowns and 0 picks. RB Robert Edwards had 9 rushes for 22 yards. SB Thyron Anderson had 5 receptions for 68 yards and 1 touchdown. K Damon Duval was 3/3 on field goals and 5/5 on extra points.
