Luca Congi kicked a 32-yard field goal on the last play of the game to give the Saskatchewan Roughriders a 27-26 CFL victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night.
Roughriders quarterback Kerry Joseph set up the winning points with a 24-yard pass to Yo Murphy and his own 21-yard scramble to the Montreal 20-yard line.
Saskatchewan (8-8) needs only to win either of its last two games or for the Edmonton Eskimos to lose one to clinch a playoff spot. Montreal (9-7) remains in a first-place with the Toronto Argonauts (9-6) in the East Division but failed to clinched a home playoff game.
It was Montreal's second game since general manager Jim Popp took over the head coaching duties from Don Matthews. The Alouettes beat the Roughriders 35-8 in Montreal on Monday.
Montreal broke out to a quick 3-0 lead within two minutes when quarterback Anthony Calvillo connected with Kerry Watkins for a 55-yard bomb on the first play from scrimmage and Damon Duval followed shortly afterward with a 31-yard field goal.
Running back Shermar Bracey gave the Roughriders a 7-3 lead midway through the opening period on a 63-yard run. Calvillo replied by guiding an 11-play, 54-yard drive that culminated in Robert Edwards' one-yard touchdown run on third down with 40 second left in the period.
Edwards upped the lead to 17-7 with a two-yard run nine minutes into the second quarter. Consecutive completions of 18 and 30 yards from Kerry Joseph to Matt Dominguez put the Roughriders on the Montreal four-yard line, from where Joseph ran to paydirt on an option keeper. Luca Congi booted a 20-yard field goal two seconds before halftime for a 17-17 tie.
Duval made a 26-yard field goal for the only scoring of third quarter. Saskatchewan had a golden opportunity to take the lead late in the quarter when Joseph connected with Dominguez on a 57-yard gain, only to have Montreal's Kai Ellis strip the ball from Dominguez on the Montreal one.
Duval added a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Saskatchewan replied with a 75-yard touchdown march, highlighted by Corey Grant's 47-yard run on an end-around and terminating in Joseph's nine-yard touchdown pass to Andy Fantuz to put the Roughriders ahead 24-23.
Duval added a 32-yard field goal with 4:32 remaining to give Montreal a 26-24 lead before Congi kicked his game-winning field goal.
Saskatchewan played without running back Kenton Keith (ribs) and receiver Jason Armstead (knee) while the Alouettes did without receiver Ben Cahoon.
Montreal has a 19-3 record against the Roughriders since re-entering the CFL in 1996, losing only in 2001 at Montreal and in 2004 at Regina before Friday's loss.
