Monte Merkel (Monte John Merkel) was born on November 6, 1916 in Keystone, Iowa. After going to high school at St. John's Military Academy (Delafield, WI), Merkel attended the University of Kansas. Merkel made his professional debut in the NFL in 1943 with the Chicago Bears. He played for the Chicago Bears for his entire 1 year career.
