Monte Cross (Montford Montgomery Cross) was born on August 31, 1869 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He made his Major League debut on September 27, 1892 for the Baltimore Orioles. In 1895, his rookie year, he hit .257 with 3 home runs and 54 RBI. Cross played for the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Perfectos, Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Athletics over the course of his 15 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Monte Cross's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1899, when he stole 26 bases and knocked in 65 runs. However, others believe that it was 1897, when he stole 38 bases, hit for a .286 average and knocked in 55 runs.
