Money To Burn

Fashion designer Marc Ecko must have money to burn, after paying a hefty $752,467 for Barry Bonds' record-breaking home run ball that bested Hank Aaron's record of 755 home runs, Ecko has started a website where people vote to determine whether to give the ball to the Hall of Fame, brand it with an asterisk or blast it into space. He plans to announce the final tally after voting ends Sept. 25. Our personal views as to if Bonds should have an asterisk next to his name in the record books, doesn't change the fact that this is a historic piece of sports history. Ecko must truly have money to burn, because he may very well be lighting that three quarters of a million dollar ball on fire, depending how the public votes. Unfortunately, just like on American Idol, the most votes does necessarily show true public opinion. Ecko had not even taken possession of the ball before setting up a Web site that lets visitors vote on which of the three outcomes they think the ball most deserves. This is just a stunt in a long list of stunts this rich little SOB has done to self promote himself. However, this time a true piece of sports history may be destroyed in the process.
