Monday Shmonday: Plea Addition

I have yet to chime in on the plight of Michael “Oogie” Vick and that is for one reason: it is over done. It is like the steak that you forgot about on the grill while you were watching the game, and twenty minutes later you rush out to find that it is as hard as a Frisbee. Everyone is talking about it, and rightfully so; it is a huge topic.
But that is why I want to talk about it. I want to discuss the PEOPLE who discuss it; the people who call in to radio stations to say that Vick is being burnt because of his race, or the people who say that we hunt deer so what is wrong with dog fighting.
Oogie killed dogs. We know that, and if he didn’t do it directly, he FUNDED the people that did. What happens if you fund guys who rob a bank? You go to jail. It is illegal. He has admitted to owning it and financing it. The guy killed dogs.
Now, that is out, but what peeves me is the fact that people are so ignorant about this. All of these are actual arguments that I have heard on the radio or on the news.
“He is black; if this were Peyton Manning you wouldn’t be attacking him so badly.” This argument is bunk. Why? Because I would be ANGRIER at Peyton. Why? Because he is a solid human being who I have learned to trust. Vick flips off fans. And that has nothing to do with his color. As sports fans were are taught to trust and understand the people that we watch. We are asked to pay 60 dollars a game to watch these people who are supposed to be Role Models, and when a guy like Vick does something stupid, I am NOT upset because he is black but because he is someone that children look up to.
“People hunt deer.” You are right, they do, but they also do it legally by purchasing a license and going to areas that control it. Plus, I have NEVER seen a man attach a car battery to a deer and wait for it to die. Ever tried to drown an elk?
“’We feel that whatever the courts demand as a punishment for what he has done, once he has paid his debt to society, then he should be treated like any other person in the NFL,’ White said.” From CCN.com. R.L. White, president of the Atlanta chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on Vick.
"’The announcement by CBS and MSNBC that they will no longer carry Don Imus' show is a welcome first step in removing this scourge from the airwaves,’ said NAACP National Board of Directors Chairman Julian Bond.” From Newsbuster.org. So…a guy who makes a mistake and says something stupid should be punished worse then someone who kills animals? What about if someone was said something bad as a minority about another minority?
“ If he's being let go because of that incident, I'm not sure the punishment fits the crime,’ said Vic Bullock, executive director of the Hollywood bureau of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.” The NAACP’s Hollywood bureau is displeased with “Grey’s Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington being fired for making anti-gay slurs.
A white man should be fired for using a racial slur, but a black actor shouldn’t be for using a homosexual insult? Seems like a bit of a double standard to me.
My question is this: what needs to come out for people to realize that just because they may eat dog in another country it is illegal to beat, kill, smother, electrocute, hang, punch, kick or fight a dog in the United States?
Michael Vick, if he serves a sentence that fits the crime PER THE ORDER OF THE LAW, should be allowed to live a full and happy life. He has a lot of growing up to do before I would want to see him on the field and I hope that he gets that. We all deserve happiness.
