Mo Rivera Won't Join Red Sox Next Year

14
Vote

ESPN.com is reporting that Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will not sign with the Red Sox if he cannot negotiate an extension next offseason. Rivera said, "I respect the players and I respect the organization, but we've had so much happen between us. I don't think I could do it."

As a Sox fan, I can respect this, especially considering how pissed I was when Johnny Damon signed with the Yankees. However, I would be lying if I said that I hadn't had dreams about Mo closing at Fenway for the next few years. I expect he'll resign with New York next year, but if he doesn't, he makes whatever team he does sign with an instant playoff contender, no questions asked.

Sure, Mo Rivera says this now, but I wonder if he'd change his tune if Theo came knocking on his door with plenty of zeros following that dollar sign...after all, it was the money that made Damon walk. If the Sox ponied up that extra year, he's not wearing pinstripes.

The difference being, Damon is an idiot and has never been the model of class or integrity. His days of throwing pumpkins off the 34th floor of the Boston Ritz weren't that long ago. I would take something that Mo says a bit more seriously. With that said, it wouldn't surprise me if he did switch sides.

I agree with J Cunningham. Everyone seems to forget that, when Bernie Williams was a free agent years back, he was all set to sign with the Red Sox (unbelievable, considering what's going on with him lately), until he had an eleventh hour conversation with Steinbrenner. Players go where the money is. That being said, as a Yankee fan, seeing Rivera in a Red Sox uniform would be one of my worst nightmares.

Must be a slow news day when "Things That Won't Happen Next Year" is one of the top stories.

Well, anything involving the Yankees and Red Sox is news here on TWWL.

I'm sorry, but he does not make whatever team he goes to an instant playoff contender. Any closer in the history of the game at his best, does not make any team an instant playoff contender. For instance, if he signs with the Devil Rays next year, they are not an instant contender.
