Mitchell Report-Where is the proof?

This article in its original form first appeared on: http://tonysthoughtsoverhere.blogspot.com/   My preliminary response after a fair skim of the Mitchell Report, is that the report is a joke. There is no real hard evidence supporting many of the claims of steroid use. Many of the accounts state, this could have happened, there was speculation, I don't remember... How credible is Kirk Radomski? The guy is only cooperating under a plea agreement to lessen his sentence for steroid distribution, money laundering and tax evasion. The U.S. Attorney's office wouldn't have been interested in his cooperation for him to turn in the Manny Alexanders and the F.P. Santangelos of the world, they wanted big fish and whats to say Radomski is not fabricating his accounts of steroid use by players such as Clemens, Pettitte and Tejada to save himself. Absent any concrete evidence; test results, order forms, personal admissions how can anyone put any faith in this report. Radomski supplied numerous cashed checks from players, but as a "clubby" it is not unusual or out of the ordinary for "clubbies" to make purchases for players that would need to be repaid, and players often tip "clubbies" either monthly or at the end of the season. Even more distressing then the fact that Senator Mitchell is a director in the front office of the Boston Red Sox, but he is an attorney who should be familiar with the standards needed to make these accusations in such a large public forum. Mitchell uses very little factual data to support many of his claims and could hear from the attorney's of many of the players accused and possibly defamed in his work (Although highly unlikely becuase that would open the players to disclosing personal information.) As stated earlier this report was a waste of time and did nothing to help Major League Baseball rehabilitate and/or help baseball deal with the steroid issue.

Some of the most muscular people in all of baseball (including Radomski) are clubhouse attendants. It's not exactly a hush-hush secret amongst the less-than svelte media members.

Just because there are checks there is no proof that they were for steroids, as stated in the article it is not unusual for players to be giving "clubbies" large sums of money for tips, sometimes as much as $20,000 per year. Radmonski is a criminal, why would anyone take his word as gospel?

The problem is that regardless of what proof there in this report is that 90% of us probably expected even worse, or assume even worse of the sport. For example more people that were named have or do use, and even more stars than were named here.

Most of us already suspect it, so all this really does is add names to those thoughts. Is it fair to some of the players in the report that there may not be 100% deniable evidence to accuse them? No its not.

But it also isn't fair what this sport has done to itself, and it's fans. While I feel sympathy for the potential innocents named, I dont feel guilty in a way for all this time these things have gone on and other players have been bystanders in this and in some sort of code not said a damn thing for all these years.

Now innocents, the league, and the fans all pay the price. This is a long time coming. And while the report may be enough to scarlet letter these guys, maybe joe schmoe will think twice when he hears through the grapevine his teammate is using, or he witnesses it first hand, or maybe if we are lucky, this may actually be a deterrent for using in the first place.
