Mitchell

Baseball has a black eye. By now, everyone with a pulse or loves baseball has read the Mitchell Report and is either angry, mad as hell or glad that their favorite player did or did not make the list. Baseball fans have long memories, some of them are still smarting from the 94 strike and have yet to come back. Others have forgiven and moved on and returned to being fans of the grand old game. Some may never forgive.

In order for baseball to repair the damage that has been done (and it is repairable, to an extent) and do it as quickly as humanly and legally possible, After reading part of the report, I am almost persauded to allow for random testing, starting in rookie leagues and working up the baseball food chain. Those that offend will and should be punished, either through monatery means or suspensions or perhaps banishment from the game and/or loss of pensions.

The game needs to be cleaned up. The black eye needs to heal and there's not a steak big enough to cover the damned thing up.

The Minor Leagues have a very strict drug policy, much more so than what is in the majors. The problems start AFTER players reach the big leagues, not before.

I would agree with Kels that there is strict drug testing before the 40 man roster already. First incident 50 game suspension, second out of the game, but there are a lot of loopholes. Players who juice who are either signing bonus babies or are considered top prospects are often placed on the 40 man roster to avoid testing. Also, the practice of having them unavailable for testing is pretty commonplace. It is very interesting that none of the top prospects get caught. I also believe, after having covered the minors for more than a decade, that several of these guys who get caught are being given the stuff that they can't afford with the intent of having them get caught in the testing net, which is supposed to satisfy the media and the public that MLB is doing its job. There is no explanation why some of these guys, particularly low level Dominicans who have been busted, get their hands on drugs that are worth more than they make in a year. They have poor families, and they come from places where the whole town probably couldn't lay its hands on 25,000.

See? This is well enough written that it made its point without having to amend my take on Bud Light. Excellent job. I will make a point to check out your work more.

"By now, everyone with a pulse or loves baseball has read the Mitchell Report and is either angry, mad as hell or glad that their favorite player did or did not make the list." Interesting point of view. I beg to differ on this statement. In fact, I highly doubt that the majority of talking heads on ESPN have even read this report in its entirety let alone the average baseball fan. There is a difference between glancing at a 400 page+ document and reading it from cover to cover.
