After suffering through a winter of watching the Philadelphia Flyers finish with the worse record in club history, and the Philadelphia Sixers struggle to a sub .500 record yet again, I had much hope for the Philadelphia Phillies. After seven games, the Phillies hold a record of 1-6. In response, I am ready to chuck this laptop out the window in frustration. I, however, need this stupid thing for two bar exams in July. So instead of chucking it, I will use it to chuck words.
Oh thy Phillies, how do thy suck. Let me count the ways.
First, lets start with the manager, Mr. Charlie Manuel. This is the same man who I called the dumbest manager in all of baseball in 2006. So of course, the Phis decided to bring the clown back. They lessened this mistake by bringing in several coaches who were former managers. So I went from saying "Oh no, not again" to "Ok, maybe the coaches will manage and Charlie will make the players feel loved in the locker room". Guess what?! I am back to saying "Oh no, not again."
Can someone please explain to me the thought process of keeping relief pitcher Geoff Geary in the game to bat in the top of the 8th inning today against the New York Mets? The Phils, at that time, had a 1 run lead, no outs, and the top of the lineup coming up? Geary had already pitched in the 7th. Tomorrow is an off day. There were still a handful of pitchers in the bullpen. Why, Charlie, why? So what happened? Geary makes an out, Phils fail to score anything, and Geary then gets hammered in the bottom of the 8th. Game over.
Second, 1-6 yet again! The Phillies just love taking the first week of the season off each year. I was hoping this was not going to be the case this year. Opps, I was wrong there. Added bonus this year though. These first 10 games are against divisional oppoenents. Hence, it is becoming a golden opportunity to bury this whole season in record time.
Third, relief pitching. Of the six losses so far this year, at least three of them occurred because the bullpen could not protect the lead. Geary simply joined the choker list today. Ryan Madson and Tom Gordon thank you Geary.
Fourth, a special shout out to Jimmy Rollins. Yo J-Rol, when you said the Phils were the team to beat, we all thought you meant for 1st place. We were wrong, you meant the Phils were the team to beat each night! Ha Ha! Nice error in the bottom of the 8th today. You are also still swinging for the fences. No hard feelings, Mr. Willie May Hayes wannabe.
Fifth, leaving runners on bases. Before today's infamous debacle, the Phillies have left 59 runners on base. Not bad for 6 games of work. I don't know how many were left on today. Too afraid to look. The number may cause me to spew.
I have one last comment to make: When do the Philadelphia Eagles report for training camp?
