The first trade on deadline day was a small one. The Red Sox dealt Joel Pineiro, who they had recently designated for assignment, to the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named later. Pineiro, signed as a free agent in January after six seasons in Seattle, was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox. The 28-year-old was on the disabled list from June 28 until July 13 with a sprained right ankle. Pineiro, who is back on the 40-man roster, is 59-56 with a 4.50 ERA in his career over 216 games, including 159 starts. The deadline to make non-waiver trades is 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The cards just need a starter...pineiro has shown flashes (in Seattle) of being decent...its worth a shot for the cheap price...and since the cards only have a shot in the dark right now

Yeah, he won 16 games as a starter in 2003 in Seattle, and he's young, so he might do well in the National League. BTW, has Anthony Reyes won a game for the Cards yet? He was 0-10 last time I checked.

Yep, 1-10, with a 6.11 ERA!! I would like to nominate him for the LVP award.

Piniero has a career ERA of 4.33, BUT he once had 16 wins for Seattle? It all comes down to run support. He had Bret Boone, Ichiro, Edgar Martinez, Mike Cameron, and Randy Winn (in his prime, where he batted .295, and hit 11 homers, and 75 RBIs to go with it). I don't think he has a lotta good stuff, but HEY, you never know. A lotta pitchers had better numbers when they went to the NL..

Piniero fits right in with a staff comprised of Wainwright, Maroth, Reyes, Wells/Thompson, and of course... the staf ace... Braden Looper. Beware NL Central. Sleep with one eye open.
