Minnesota Twins 6 Kansas City Royals 4 (September 1, 2007)

Carlos Silva pitched much better today against the Kansas City Royals, and Mike Redmond provided two hits and two RBI, as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-4 in a late morning match up.
Carlos Silva pitched six innings, allowing three runs, on eight hits, striking out four and walking none. Silva just coming off his worst outing in over a month, last week, came out pitching much better today at the Metrodome. Carlos improved his record to 11-13, with a 3.34 era. Twins reliever Juan Rincon come on in relief in the seventh inning, allowing only one hit. Pat Neshek lasted two-thirds of an inning, and allowed one run, on two hits. Finally closer Joe Nathan finished off the Royals, pitching one and two-thirds innings, no hitting Kansas City, and striking out two.
Starting pitcher Brandon Duckworth would last only four and one-thirds of an inning, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits, striking out two and walking two. Reliever Neal Musser would pitch one an two-third innings, allowing no runs, on one hit, striking out three, and walking one. Then David Riske would pitch the final two innings, giving up no runs and no hits, while walking two.
The Twins offense was led by catcher Mike Redmond. Redmond provided two hits, in three at bats, batted in two runs, and walked once. Minnesota scored first, in the bottom of the second inning, when Royal starter Brandon Duckworth walked Jason Kubel with two outs. Then came a Mike Redmond single to short stop Tony Pena, advancing Kubel to second. Luis Rodriguez added a double of his own, scoring Kubel from second, and advancing Redmond to third. Duckworth would get out of the inning on a fly ball from Nick Punto.
Kansas City would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, with back to back doubles from Billy Butler, and Shane Costa. Costa's double would score Butler from second. Emil Brown would then ground out to second base, advancing Costa to third with two outs. Finally, short stop Tony Pena would get an RBI single to center fielder Jason Tyner. Silva would end the inning two batters later.
Minnesota would add another run and tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Louis Rodriguez would hit a one out single. Then Nick Punto would single to Tony Pena, who would commit a throwing error, allowing Rodriguez to score from first.
Kansas City would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning, on an Alex Gordon home run. That would be Gordon's 12th home run of the season.
The Twins would then take the lead for good in their half of the fifth. Minnesota would score four runs, when Brandon Duckworth would hit Jason Bartlett. Then Torii Hunter added a double, scoring Bartlett. Justin Morneau would reach first in a fielder's choice, but Hunter would be the first out at third base. Michael Cuddyer would single to center fielder Joey Gathright, and Morneau would reach third on a fielding error by Gathright. Jason Kubel's single would score Morneau, and advance Cuddyer to third. Mike Redmond would then deliver a two-run double to left field, scoring Cuddyer and Kubel. Minnesota would lead 6-3 at the end of five innings.
However, Kansas City would add one more run in the eighth inning. Once again, back to back doubles from Billy Butler and Shane Costa, would score Butler from second with no one out. Reliever Pat Neshek would then retire the next two batters, and closer Joe Nathan would come in to close out the eighth inning. Nathan would come back out in the top of the ninth inning, to record his 29th save of the year.
