The Angels and Twins continued their season series Tuesday with the second of three in Anaheim. The Angels improved to 23-29 and the Twins fell to 23-28.
Jeff Weaver went 7 strong innings yeilding 6 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 4 and gave up no walks, but allowed 2 home runs. Weaver improved to 3-7 winning his second in a row and lowered his ERA to 6.64.
Scott Baker, the Twins starter, lasted 4 2/3 innings giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 5 and gave up one home run. Baker will be glad to see June - he went 1-3 with a 8.42 ERA in May and while he only walked 4 batters in the month, he gave up 41 hits for a 1.75 WHIP.
Scoring Summary
First Inning
Scoring started in the first when Joe Mauer hit a two out single to left which set the stage for Torii Hunter's ninth home run of the year. 2-0 Twins.
The Angels quickly tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Baker walked Chone Figgins to lead off the first and he proceeded to steal second - although replays clearly indicate he was out. Orlando Cabrera followed with a double to right which scored Figgins. Vladimir Guerrero grounded to second on the first pitch making the first out, but advancing Cabrera to third. Garret Anderson followed with a pop fly behind third that Luis Rodriguez got a glove on but could not pull in - Cabrera scored. Game tied 2-2
Fifth Inning
The Angels broke it open in the fifth with 4 more runs off Baker. Figgins worked a walk on 8 pitches and took 3rd on a single by Orlando Cabrera. Vlad followed with a signle to right scoring Figgins and moving Cabrera to 3rd. Cabrera came home on a sacrifice fly by Anderson and Guerrero advanced to second on a throwing error by Jason Kubel. He later scored when Juan Rivera drilled a 0-2 pitch over the fence in left to make it 6-2 Angels. Angels lead 6-2.
Sixth Inning
The Twins got one back in the sixth when Jason Kubel lead off with his first home run of the year to bring the Twins within 3. But that is as close as they would get. Angels win 6-3.
Angels Notes
The Angels are 4-1 on the current homestand and have won six of seven.
Brendan Donnelly pitched the 8th giving up a hit and a walk, but no runs getting a hold.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect 9th for the save.
Juan Rivera made only his thrid start in seven games, but made the most of it by driving in 2 (15,16) with his 4th home run of the season.
Orlando Cabrera went 2-4 with a double (16), 2 runs and and RBI (33).
Garret Anderson went 2-2 with a walk and a sac fly. He drove in 2 (30,31).
Vladimir Guerrero went 1-4 with an RBI (45).
The Angels stay 5 behind Texas who beat Seattle 6-4.
Twins Notes
The Twins' 7-19 road record is second worst next to the Kansas City Royals
Joe Mauer went 1-3 and scored a run, continuing his strong hitting in his last 17 games (.417). Mauer is batting .352 on the season and ranks 2nd in the AL.
Torii Hunter went 2-4 with a home run (9) and two RBI (31,32).
Jason Kubel got his first home run of the year going 1-4 with an RBI (3).
The Twins remained 11.5 games behind Detroit who lost to New York 6-11.
