Jeff Suppan pitched eight shutout innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers in a 4-1 victory over Rich Hill and the Chicago Cubs.
Suppan worked himself into several jams but escaped all of them, throwing 115 pitches over the eight innings. The only Cubs run came when Mark DeRosa, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, doubled off of Derrick Turnbow. In normal weather conditions, the fly ball to left would probably have been caught, but Kevin Mench tried to stop and plant his foot, slipped on the rain-soaked grass, and the ball popped out of the glove, allowing Daryle Ward to score.
For the Brewers, the scoring came on a two-run homer from Prince Fielder (his seventh in his last 12 games at Wrigley) in the fourth inning, a solo homer from Kevin Mench in the sixth, and a Rickie Weeks RBI single in the seventh.
The Brewers improve to 13-7 and have doubled in every game they've played this year. Jeff Suppan (3-2, 2.97) gets his third straight win and Francisco Cordero (0.00, 8) picks up the save.
The Cubs fall to 7-13 on the year. Rich Hill (3-1, 1.57) gets his first loss. An interesting note: In his few appearances this season, the only team that has scored against Hill are the Brewers. (Take that, Carlos Zambrano)
Assuming the rain doesn't wash it out, the final game of the series is tomorrow afternoon, a 1:20 start. Ben Sheets for the Crew vs. Ted Lilly for the Cubs.
