Mike and Mad Dog Doing the Play by Play for the New York Mets

I think its great that the New York Mets decided to let Mike Francesa and Chris Russ (the "Mad Dog"), the hosts of the popular Mike and Mad Dog show on WFAN, do the play by play broadcast for today's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Its great to hear new voices doing the play-by-play. New perspectives, new commentary, and new ideas. What is there not to like?

This makes me think: How long will it be until average joes begin doing play-by-play broadcasts of sports events and then syndicating them using podcasting techologies?

Wouldn't it be nice for the fans to chose what broadcaster they wanted to listen to. The spectrum of possibilities are endless. If you wanted a funny broadcaster, you could stream it in. If you wanted to hear a mets game from a woman's perspective, you could stream it in. How about a broadcast in Spanish, French? Russian? I am sure those will soon be available too.

What is there not to like you ask? Umm. Two things. 1) Mike, 2) the Mad Dog

I think it would be legal. You are reporting facts. Baseball does not have the right to copyright facts. The podcaster wouldn't be able to copy the commentary of the broadcasters. The podcast would probably have to be delayed for a couple of minutes, because the podcaster would be watching it on TV.

I think Fox Soccer Channel actually has a thing were they let one fan from each team playing do the play-by-play for a game. I'm not sure how often they do it, and the one time I saw it they were almost impossible to understand, but it seemed like a fun idea.

Totally agree adding new blood. Listening to Al Leiter with Singleton and Kay when unit was throwing vs sox, it's like night and day. Those guys (singleton and kay) are so clueless sometimes and jump all over the story of the day, it's nice to hear a fresh perpsective from someone, anyone besides them.
