Mike Tiernan (Michael Joseph Tiernan) was born on January 21, 1867 in Trenton, New Jersey. He made his Major League debut on April 30, 1887 for the New York Gothams. In 1887, his rookie year, he hit .287 with 10 home runs and 62 RBI. Tiernan played for the New York Gothams and New York Giants over the course of his 13 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Mike Tiernan's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1891, when he slugged 16 home runs, stole 53 bases, hit for a .306 average and knocked in 73 runs. However, others believe that it was 1890, when he stole 56 bases, hit for a .304 average and knocked in 59 runs. Another season that some believe was Mike Tiernan's best was 1896, when he stole 35 bases, hit for a .369 average and knocked in 89 runs.
