Michael Averett Lowell was born on February 24, 1974 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and is currently the third basemen for the Boston Red Sox. Lowell was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1999 but has overcome the disease to make four All-Star appearances, most recently in the summer of 2007 with the Red Sox.

Lowell has always been a good player, but never a great one. He was a guy that the Florida Marlins could count on to give them great defense and some power. His AVG has never been very high (.272 career), but he draws an adequate number of walks and has some pop in his bat.

Lowell was drafted by the New York Yankees out of Florida International University in 1995. He would graduate in 1997 and made his major league debut with the Yankees on September 13, 1998. He appeared in just eight games that year and was traded before Spring Training in 1999 to the Florida Marlins.

He spent several years in the middle of the Marlins order. His solid defense and ability to knock in runners made him a valuable player. In 2003, Lowell was a key part of the Marlins' World Series Championship team as he hit 32 home runs and drove in 105 runs.

In 2005 his production suddenly fell off the table and he was one of the worst offensive players in baseball. Scouts say that his bat speed just wasn't there and although he was able to consistently make contact, there was nothing behind his swing. His defense never failed him, however. His sure hands and accurate arm lead to his first Gold Glove.

Because of his poor numbers in 2005, the Marlins traded Lowell along with Josh Beckett and Guillermo Mota to Boston for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Harvey Garcia and Jesus Delgado. In his first year with Sox, Lowell batted .284 with 20 homers and 80 runs batted in as the Sox missed the playoffs.

In 2007, Lowell hit .302 with 14 home runs and 63 RBIs before the All-Star break, earning himself his fourth appearance in the Midsummer Classic and first with the Sox.

Lowell capped off an amazing 2007 season with a trip to the World Series and the MVP thereof, hitting .400 with a home run, four hits, and 6 RBI.

Lowell attended Florida International University where he earned his degree in finance, and his uniform number (#15) was retired.
In 2007, Lowell hit 120 RBI's, which is Red Sox record for any third baseman; he beat Butch Hobson's 112 set in 1977.
