Mike Gundy stands up for his players.

The head football coach for Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy, did not want to talk about his team's win after the Texas Tech game on Saturday. Intstead, he wanted to lash out at a sports writer in the Daily Oklahoman. Anybody that reads the Oklahoman knows how bias they are, and how inaccurate they are as well. Jenni Carlson's recent story set a fire under Coach Gundy. Here is the article, http://newsok.com/article/3131543 . In the press conference after OSU beat Texas Tech 49-45, Gundy blew up at Ms. Carlson, which happened to be in the audience. Here is a video of the press conference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VytIZZzee0 I feel that Coach Gundy did the right thing by calling this writer out. It is a rare thing to see coach's sticking up for their players when the media tears them down. What do you think?

Mack Brown repeatedly stands up for his players, most notably Chris Simms and Vince Young. But he does it in a classy manner, rather than Gundy's insane ranting. There is nothing wrong with standing up for your players, but there is a wrong way to do it. And if you are going to call out a member of the media and claim that three fourths of her column are factually incorrect, be prepared to actually identify at least some of the parts that you contend were wrong.

Why does he have to do that? Is it the media's right to make stories up and make the people in which they offended have to explain what the truth is. This all comes down to not writing the truth. If she actually had the truth, this would be a non-issue. From someone getting to read her stories daily, she really is not that good of a sports writer, nor is the Daily Oklahoman for that matter.

He has to do that if he wants what he alleges to be the truth to get out. If she really was wrong, why won't he provide the evidence? I don't disagree with your assessment of her as a writer--I'm very unimpressed. But until Gundy or anyone else proves otherwise, I'm not going to question the truth of her story. In fact, it sounds quite believable.

Shouldn't it be the other way around there?

It is up to the reporter to verify the facts concerning the subject before writing the story. Not the other way around.

The burden of proof is on the writer not the subject. Always has been, always should be. That is ethical journalism.

Are you saying she didn't verify her facts? She wrote it, an editor approved it, and both she and the paper stand by the story. If Gundy says it's factually incorrect, let's hear it. Here's what happened: Gundy said a lot off the cuff in anger and defense of his player. But in the following days, when asked to point out factually incorrect statements, he "wanted to move on". Translation: "Your article was 100% correct but I was standing up for my player and dug a hole for myself. Please help me out of it by pretending like that news conference never happened, OK?"

I disagree! Here is the proof, Ms. Carlson puts in her article, "If you listen to the rumblings and the rumors, Cowboy coaches simply grew weary of it.". Now that we know her sources, what grounds of fact does she have. Oh, thats right, the fact Bobby was seen laughing on the sidelines with a coach. Most of the article was fiction, but I know that some of it is true. Like the fact that he gets nervous before games, I sure that is true since he said it himself. Lets see what else that I can verify, oh yeah, the fact that Bobby is now a backup quaterback. I mean come on, does Gundy really need to do all of that because of a made up story?

I fail to see how that is proof. I read that as being a source that does not want to be named. You rip her for writing "fiction", I say she is protecting her sources. Barring further information, I think we have reached an impasse.

No, Bobby does get nervous before games. He told some reporters that one day. Most great athletes do get nervous before, but that was just one fact that Carlson had.
