Mike Cubbage
[edit] Biography
Mike Cubbage (Michael Lee Cubbage) was born on July 21, 1950 in Charlottesville, Virginia. He made his Major League debut on April 7, 1974 for the Texas Rangers. In 1975, his rookie year, he hit .224 with 4 home runs and 21 RBI. Cubbage played for the Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and New York Mets over the course of his 8 year career.
He was a three-sport star at Lane High School in his native Charlottesville, and many people in that football-oriented city expected him to become a football player. But he preferred baseball, and was drafted by the nearby Washington Senators. They had moved to Texas by the time he started in his first MLB game on April 7, 1974. He played for the Rangers, wearing uniform #4, until 1976 when he was traded to the Minnesota Twins (ironically, another former Washington Senators team!). The Twins assigned him uniform #26, and he played for them until 1960. He was then traded to the New York Mets, for whom he completed his MLB playing career in 1961 wearing #3.
Although Cubbage had been primarily a shortstop in high school, this was the only infield position he did not play in MLB, playing mostly second and third base, with a few games at first and a few as designated hitter.
Most people believe that Mike Cubbage's best season was 1977, when he knocked in 55 runs.
