Michigan sucks at football

by Suckatsports

I saw the loss, and I had an immediate reaction. So what really happened in Michigan yesterday? For the record, I'm not a Michigan fan, in fact I'm an OSU fan.

As I'm sitting at the game ( OSU vs. YSU), I'm watching the score, Appalachian State is up almost the entire game, and I'm torn on how I feel. No matter the result yesterday, Michigan is the far superior team in talent; that's what makes this loss so inexcusable. Do I really want them to lose? It would make the Big 10 the laughing stock of college football, this is the kind of loss that will resonate with the league and all of its contingency. On the other hand, I really don't like Michigan, so how greatly would a loss humiliate that program. The result of course did the work for me.

This doesn't happen in college football, it just doesn't. There's too many moving parts that all have to fall in place. The stars have to align, and the other team has to be caught so surprised that they never recover, and it all happened. This isn't the first time a 1-AA team has ever beaten a 1-A team, but there's never been a more grand stage to do it on. The first thing that came into my mind, is that this is the most shocking loss/win (all depends on your perspective) in college football history. I stand by it, I think this is a severely damaging loss to a program with a pristine history, save the last 5 years. Lloyd no longer has his swan song to walk out to.

The worst part for Michigan is that this was no fluke. Did anyone else see flashes of Troy Smith running through the Michigan defense when Armanti Edwards took off? There's been one thing that's been able to consistently beat Michigan - the moving quarterback. Troy Smith, Vince Young, and Armanti Edwards all single-handedly brought the always-vaunted Michigan Defense to its knees. Not to adjust to this after 3 years is all kinds of embarrassing.

Sure, if they play 50 times again Michigan wins no less than 49 of them, but that's only because they'll be ready. The truth is, Appalachian State didn't get some sort magical last second play, the diligently moved the ball all day, they had a plan and it worked. Michigan on the other hand, was never prepared mentally, and that edge is hard to regain when you come into a game thinking your second-best effort will get the job done (see: Ohio State vs. Florida 2006). It just doesn't look like Ron English was the genius everyone said he was last year.

There's not one part of UM that wasn't at fault that night, or the following morning. The coaches were out coached, the players were out played, and the fans were out... fanned. And that's why I don't put everything on Carr's head; he won't be fired, but he won't be there next year. There's no reason the players, with such superior - if young - talent couldn't get to the quarterback, couldn't shake loose a defender, couldn't make just one more play better than Appalachian State. Above that, this is the first time UM has even played a 1-AA opponent, that in itself is equally embarrassing - same goes for OSU.

If that doesn't sting enough, here's something I'm sure we've all already seen, but it really brings the point home.

Best of the Rest. Besides this shocker, there were plenty of other good games this Saturday, and it was great to sit by the TV all day.

California out muscled Tennessee in a high scoring game in Berkeley. During the first quarter, I thought the prevailing thought would be the physical play of the SEC once again dominating the finesse offenses of the Pac 10. I'm glad this didn't happen to feed the SEC Football ego.

Texas had a much close game against Arkansas State then anyone could have ever imagined. I wasn't able to watch it because of what it was, but that's scary. Maybe the rebuilt defense without Gene Chizik may hold the team back more than we thought.

Auburn got away with one over Kansas State. They were lucky to win this game, even though they were completely outplayed, and out gained. To their credit, the made the big plays when they needed to, and the home crowd was the difference. What's Michael Wilbon doing on the sidelines?

Virginia Tech had an emotion [barely win over ECU]. I chalk that up just to the sheer amount of teams that went through that campus in the last couple of months. The defense led the way, but the offense brought up the rear.

Wisconsin over Washington State was one of the most entertaining games of the afternoon. I knew this was going to be no cakewalk, but Washington State really punched Badgy the Badger in the mouth to open the game. Tyler Donovan looked really good, and Wisconsin looked like the most complete and best team in the Big 10.

Georgia Tech embarrassed Notre Dame in South Bend. This couldn't have gone any better for everyone that hates the Golden Dome - like I do. All quarterbacks looked horrible on the ND sideline, and maybe Charley Weis isn't the genius those blinded by the light called him to be.

To wrap things up, there's a great amount of response to this Michigan debacle, and some are ready to live up to it. But what's with mgoblog? He took the site down! It's not technical issues, it's personal issues.

As an Ohio State fan, I'm torn between the desire to express joy at Michigan's humiliation and feeling pissed off because it makes the Big Ten the butt of jokes for the next 5 years and cheapens our coming humiliation of the Wolverines this year in the Big House.

Yeah, I do, that's why I was torn between cheering for ASU to win. On one hand it sucks, but on the other hand, I really don't like them.

Some real quality games on Saturday. I hope this is only an indication of what is to come this season in college football.

If Michigan "sucks at football" than I guess your little rivalry with the Wolverines is the most overrated in sports.

Perhaps less mocking of Michigan's inability to win yesterday is required along with a little more praise & credit to Appalachian State for overcoming the odds and winning? Or it simple too much of hassle to acknowledge a job well done?

Read closer Tyrone, I said that this win was no fluke. And the headline is just made for the sake of hyperbole, if you go the article, the actual name has everything to do with Appalachian State.

Yeah, you are quite a real man of genius. Too bad the title was the most riveting part of your work here. Thanks for providing the thousandth article in the past 24 hours on Michigan losing this game. Quite original, along with the umpteenth links to your blog, which I won't bother to click and read.

Tyrone, no one twisted your arm to read the post. If you didn't like it, then you didn't like it, it's your prerogative. But you managed to read the post, even though there were some million other posts out there on the same topic. You don't have to click on anything if you don't want to, I really don't care to be honest. I wrote that on my blog, before I read the other reactions of people who's opinions I like to read - then cross published it here. That's all there is to it, there wasn't some tremendous rouse that I worked out to get you over here.

No, I'm not being dishonest, I really don't care. If I had something invested in this, fiscally or emotionally, maybe I would care - but I don't. You have your opinion, you don't like my writing, I really can't do anything about that. I'm not here to please everyone, I'm just here to write down my opinions. So, whether people like it or not really doesn't bother me. So no, not being dishonest. Sorry to dissapoint.

Armanti Edwards is waaaay more frightening to watch than Troy Smith was; that is where the OSU fandom comes out. I was at work for the game and couldn't believe the speed at which he was busting through the line watching the highlights. Blink and he was fifteen yards upfield.

I would love to haved watched Armanti Edwards run, but alas, it was on the BTN, so I couldn't. I've only seen him play a time or so when the D1-AA championship was televised last year.

All that being said, he looked very fast on the highlights. I'd like to think that I'd give Smith the nod not only because I'm an OSU fan, but because he beat Michigan 3 times, and coming up big consistently (yeah, except for once, I'm sure you'll bring that up) against much better competition. Also, Vince Young was pretty good against that Michigan defense too.

ASU did a great job, they executed their game plan, and they clearly had the talent to exploit something that they saw in the Michigan defense - all credit goes to them for that. But anyone who says that they played against the same Michigan team that everyone else plays against, mentally, is kidding themselves. There wasn't the same mental edge that Armanti Edwards saw that Vince Young or Troy Smith played against. So, with all due respect to Armanti, and given the shot he may have, in the same position faired as well or better than Vince Young and/or Troy Smith, but one game may be too quick to judge on.

I wouldn't have taken that shot. While I'm not a huge Troy Smith fan and I'm not green enough to believe that the outcome would have changed; I would've liked to have seen that game played with Ted Ginn Jr on the field. Otherwise, noted; while we shouldn't be calling them the greatest team ever for winning this game the UM defense will be watching film of this kid all season long.

I wouldn't have blamed you if you did - it's the most recent thing on most people's minds - especially everyone who thought Troy Smith was overrated, and everyone in SEC country. I would have also liked to see that game with a healthy Ted Ginn, it would have made my winter and summer a lot better. They didn't come prepared to play, Florida was better that day, but they weren't 41-14 better. I'm sure Miami fans say the same thing about the 2002 Fiesta Bowl.

that was a good articicle u just wrote, do you write for a sports magazine? anyway i was watching the whole game on TV, when it was close coming into the second half i just thought, oh App state is holding their weight for a bit but theres no way they can hold on to the end, but they did. Even though they used POOR clock management, they had first and goal on what the 9 yard line? why not run the clock down some more and get it down too 3 or 5 seconds? i guess they were worried about fumbling it or turning the ball over, still it almost came back to hurt them. A long shot down field for michigan and i thought the game was over. But a nice block kick, i was pulling for App state the whole game

I appreciate the praise. Certainly you and Tyrone don't think alike. No, I do not write for a sports magazine, I just do this for fun, because I like sports. I wish I could say that I was watching, but thanks to the BTN I couldn't watch. I have heard multiple breakdowns (and from what little I saw on the highlights) that they could have killed a little more time. All's well that ends well, right?

Michigan was overated and will always be overated (except for maybe now in Week 2). App State is a great team in their division. But NO WAY does ANY team in any divison outside of D-1 come into the home field of a #5 ranked D-1 team and beat them. MI deserves to be knocked out of the top 25. You guys SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
