Michigan Loss Stunning

I sat down yesterday looking forward to watching my favorite team in what seemed to be a national championship caliber team. By the end of the game I was in utter disbelief. Appalachian State was supposed to come into the Big House, take their beating, and go home. Michigan seemed to finally break away when Mike Hart broke loose for a 54 yard touchdown run in what could be one of the top plays of the year. With Michigan already ahead 32-31, Brandent Englemon interception seemed to seal the deal. But, once again Michigan could not capitalize as Michigan had the first of its two field goals blocked.

Edwards marched his Mountaineers down the field for Rauch to kick what they hoped to be the game winning field goal to go ahead 34-32. Even with less than a minute on the clock, I still clung to hope that Manningham could break loose and the two Heisman hopefulls could connect for a big play. And thats exactly what they did, as Henned threw a 46 yard pass to Manningham to set up a game winning field goal. But once again the kick was blocked as Crable missed his blocking assignment.

I cannot imagine what Hart, Henne, Long, and Carr are thinking as they put off both the NFL and retirement to return for this promising year. They can only hope to win out, win the Big Ten, and win a BCS bowl game to somewhat assuage the sour taste of such a stunning defeat.

After losses to Ohio State last November and USC at the Rose Bowl, does yesterday really surprise you?

I believe Mich is a good team but, I feel they overlooked a very good second tier team, and they were prepared to play michigan where michigan was looking forward to a great season they forgot they had to beat App. State first. My hats off to App. State for their win, good luck in your pursuit for the championship also... as for Michigan I still think their going to have a good season with lots of good football.

It's kind of frustrating to me to see how much of the coverage is about Michigan losing versus Appalachian State winning, demonstrating just how little we learned from this upset. Even in becoming the first 1-AA team to defeat a ranked 1-A opponent EVER, Appalachian State is considered less important in the story than Michigan is.

I feel your pain, but this is hardly a complete surprise. Michigan has a long and storied history of destroying national championship homes with an ugly September loss. Granted, this is the ugliest...

There's nothing I love more than a small-time team beating up on the team with shiny uniforms. It was like "Necessary Roughness" in real life!

You've got to give major props to the Appalachian State program, men among boys in 1-AA for years and now showing that they're for real against any opponent. They played a masterful game on all three phases, especially special teams. I'd like to see how they would match up against Virginia Tech.

"Necessary Roughness" is a great movie, by the way. It's the best sports movie no one knows.
