Michigan's Loss Confirms the Wastefulness of Preseason Rankings

17
Vote

by SSreporters

Why does the AP and USA Today feel giddy that they need to rank 25 teams before the teams even snap the ball? What we saw yesterday wasn't a #5 football team in Michigan. At best, we saw a #22 team. The media should start ranking college football teams AFTER they play an actual game or two. That's exactly what will partially dent this upset by App. State (not to take anything away from them). It would be an upset even if Michigan were ranked #25, but the fact that they over-hyped Michigan from the start, helped pump up this achievement. So take note, that although this is a monumental upset, it will be somewhat tainted because of Michigan's unnecessary preseason ranking. It would be even more egg in the AP's face if Michigan fails to win 8 games this year.

That being said, here is my top 10 for the week.

1. USC

2. LSU

3. West Virginia

4. Florida

5. Wisconsin

6. Oklahoma

7. Texas

8. Virginia Tech

9. California

10. Louisville

Excellent article. I, however, would put Penn State in the Top 10. Virginia Tech is not that good. Neither is Texas.

That's why I dropped them from 4 to 7 after that first game.

Their defense didn't. VT will be a very different team when they're playing a game that doesn't immediately follow a hyper-emotional pregame ceremony.

The rankings at the beginning of the season reflect what voters think will happen during the season. The rankings at the end of the season reflect what voters thought happened during the season. But the end-of-season rankings are at least partially based on the preseason rankings, in the sense that if you're ranked #1 preseason and you don't lose, you'll most likely be ranked #1 at the end of the season. For example, when Auburn, USC, and Oklahoma were all unbeaten a few years back, USC and OU were ranked #1 and #2 preseason, while Auburn was ranked #18 or something. Because USC and OU didn't lose, they held on to the top two spots. So, essentially, Auburn was left out of the championship game because the voters didn't think they'd be good enough to play in the championship game before the season started.

What the voters are doing is predicting. When the season is underway, they analyze. So they can do their predictions, just don't finalize it and call it an official poll.

Very true Kwitt, couldn't agree with you more. In all honesty, I don't quite understand why it's so hard for people to accept that "pre-season" collegiate rankings in football IS THE "BEGINNING" (and prolly one of the more important) VARIABLE(S) OF THE EQUATION DEFINING COLLEGE FOOTBALL???? Question: Will pre-season ranking in the media EVER go away? With regards to Kwitt's ex. of USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn- yeah, Oklahoma got smoked in BCS title game by 'SC and Auburn looked dominant in their's vs. [who cares? insert here- just remember Tuberville's whining after their win]. So, OK- Auburn remained undefeated and won. Maybe they should have played 'SC that year. But. . . same with LSU/Oklahoma title game -- 'SC smokes [who cares again- they got beat- insert team here] -- you don't hear 'SC fans or PAC10 whining about "titles" or "pre-season rankings" or "toughest conferences" or any other crap that seems to infest college football blogospheres and chat rooms. JUST PLAY BABY! and let the chips fall where they may. Play every game like it's a "playoff game" and show up. Take your wins and losses with dignity and respect to your opponents and shut the flock up already. Why is that so difficult? Forgive me for my tenor, but. . . . I got my opinions, I don't begrudge SS's or anyone else's, it's just that this topic is becoming tiresome already.

Auburn??? Auburn got Outplayed like no one's business by K State for about three quarters; K State is just too inexperienced across the board to slam the door like they should have.

I think Kwitt was referring to a few years ago when Auburn went undefeated and was left out of the title game as pre-seaosn 1 and 2 OU and USC got the bid.

I think it's funny/ironic that you bemoan pre-season/early season rankings and then give us your top 10 after one week of games.

I dont think there's anything wrong with ranking the teams after games have been played. It's just those preseason polls that gotta go out the door.

I disagree. The Michigan loss just means everyone's opinion on how they would do was wrong. We are often wrong (in a general sense) about guessing how the future turns out. It's why we play the games at all.

I think that college football fans are smart enough to take the pre-season and early rankings in their proper context. I think we can understand that they are predictions and that they are less likely to be accurate than mid- and late-season numbers. Without pre-season rankings, early season upsets wouldn't have the impact that they do. Appalachian State beating likely-to-be-ranked-when-the-rankings-start Michigan is much less dramatic than beating #5 Michigan. I like drama in my football.

Texas, Michigan, and Virginia Tech all looked pitiful, but only Michigan got the loss. For the other two teams, the flawed ranking system will keep them in the top 10, rather than hurt them.

Look without preseason rankings, alot of us would not get near as excited about our favorite teams. Alot of teams use those rankings to feed off of, to give them more excitment. Yes I agree that they are usually a little off, but without them you might be wondering on the first week of games "which games to watch " Even the "experts" make mistakes

These rankings have nothing to really do for the average college football fan (or the programs they support) and everything to do for gambling.

There is no greater hypocrisy in all of sports than the NCAA witch-hunting football players for accepting "gifts" such as a car ride, a new suit, etc. while turning a blind eye to the b.s. shenanigans of booster clubs with deep pockets.

The bubble is about to burst on this absurd double-standard at the expense of student athletes (I refuse to paint with a broad brush that all these players don't deserve these college scholarships and the subsequent benefits) and true college football fans.
