Michael Jordan Back on the Court - Can He Still Play?

by Highlite15

With the abundance of sports news reported everyday, one of the biggest, most talked about headlines was a 44-year-old NBA owner participating in practice with his team. It just so happens that owner was Michael Jordan. No, the greatest basketball player of all-time isn't contemplating a return to the court. But MJ's emergence from the boardroom did get me thinking. If he wanted to, could he still play? Unquestionably YES! Don't forget he scored 51 points in a game at the age of 38. Then scored 43 points when he was 40-years-old, shattering Kareem 's previous high of 27 in 1987.

But all this talk is clearly dependent on a laundry list of "what-ifs."

  • If his knees are healthy
  • If he is in the best condition - for a 44-year-old
  • If he's on the right team and in the right situation (think aging superstar playing to compete for a championship a la Robert Horry w/superhuman basketball abilities)
  • And if, most importantly - he could suppress the #1 reason he is Michael Jordan? That eternal, inextinguishable competitive fire that drives him to dominate every minute of every game.

Can you picture Jordan only playing 20-25 minutes a game coming off the bench? Being the 3rd or 4th scoring option? Not being the guy everyone in the arena knows is going to take the last shot at the buzzer? I can't, and neither can he.

Ultimately, that is what keeps #23 from making another Washington Wizard-esque return to the game he loves. So for now I'll take the images of him fading - slowly and not as far - away from Raymond Felton to knock down his bread and butter shot.

P.S.

I'll save my thoughts on what MJ would do in this era if he were 29-years-old for another post. Hint: Kobe, Wade, Lebron and any of the other superstar guards should consider themselves lucky.

Here's a basketball article that isn't ONF's or LASportsblog's. ;) ARE YOU SERIOUS!? I'd love to see another Michael Jordan comeback.

In Season, doesn't that make you wonder a little when 3 guys are rotating on NBA articles?

That's amazing!!! He still got that awesome shot. I bet if he was really trying, he could still burn every single one of those players. I think he could still play in the NBA even at 44.

If Shaq can play when he's 35 at 300 lbs, if MJ's in good shape, he can definitely (still) play in the NBA.

He is just a smart basketball player. He wouldn't be flying through the lane dunking on ppl any more, but he would be a much much better version of what Rip Hamilton does now. Use all types of screens to get easy shots. And although he can't fadeaway as far, he still is crafty enough to post up most 2 and 3 men in the league today.

I'd like to see him coach. He knows the game better than anybody, plus his players would respond well and give him a ton of respect, since he could whip half the guys on the team in one-on-one.

Jordan is my favorite player of all time but I would prefer it if he didnt cheapen his legacy by coming back. I wish he would have retired sooner than he did and gone out on top.

I agree, in a way. MJ woud definitely ruin his legacy by making a 3rd comeback of his career. He'll kinda be like the basketball version of Roger Clemens; only difference is that MJ is and always has been clean.

Ideally I would have like to see him not retire after the first 3-peat and likely win 8 in a row then hang it up. I don't think he could be a coach - he is too competitive as is. You see he can't stay in the board room now. If he was the coach he would be trying to play everyday and would hold players that are no where near his level to an unrealistic standard.

I would've loved to see Michael never retire the first or second or third time and still be playing. I think it's safe to say that the game has never passed him by, and I'd place any bet that in the right situation against the right team he'd still light it up for 30-plus.

He can definitely still play at a decent level but I wouldn't want to see him out there. When players stay too long it ruins there image for everyone. Right now most people don't even think about the time with the Wizards but if he were to play again, everyone would remember that over his time with the Bulls. Can he still play? Of course. Could he regularly score 30+, doubt it.

if he was 25 now....he'd score 60 points a game! i watch the kids play now and wonder if they's even be stars in the "jordan-era" wade driving on isiah and mahorn!!! ouch!!! lebron going to the hole with ewing there!!! so many great players were in the "background" because of #23....they'd be "gods" now! even at his age jordan would score 15 a game easy!

He still managed to never average lower than 20.0 PPG in any season he played in. That's pretty good.

Who cares about his career averages? I would love to see Michael come back. The NBA is not fun to watch anymore because Mike is not there. The only other player I like to watch now is Kobe and that is because he's the next best to Michael.
