Running back Michael Bush, who ran for 1,143 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2005, sustained a broken right leg in the No. 13 Louisville Cardinals' season opener against Kentucky. Bush, a much-hyped preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, was attended to by medical staff on the field before being carted off with an air cast on his leg a few minutes into the third quarter.
According to reports, Bush, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound senior, has a broken tibia, a large bone in the lower leg. He reportedly will miss the entire 2006 season.
This is a huge hit to a Louisville team with BCS hopes. Bush, who ran for 124 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, took a pitch from quarterback Brian Brohm on Louisville's second play of the second half, then had his leg pinned awkwardly under him while being tackled.
Bush lay on the ground for several minutes before being placed on a stretcher and put in an ambulance and taken to a local hospital. He waved his right arm to the capacity crowd before departing.
