Miami Trades Chambers to Chargers

Fox Sports is reporting that the Miami Dolphins have traded Chris Chambers to the San Diego Chargers for a second round draft choice. I don't see that this is a great addition for the Chargers. Chambers is one of the most under-achieving wide receivers in the league. The San Diego offense is clearly built around 2 things: handing the ball to Ladanian Tomlinson and passing it to Antonio Gates. No defense is going to change their gameplan because Chris Chambers is lining up in the slot.

On the Miami side of the trade, though, this seems to indicate that they are in complete rebuilding mode. Though Chambers is a huge disappointment, he is their leading receiver and the biggest name on their offense. Letting him go for a second round pick shows that they are writing off this season and looking toward 2008. All in all, I'd say Miami got the better of this trade.

The Chargers definitly needed an upgrade at wideout. This should help, but they are still a team of #2 receivers.

I think that I would take any second-round rookie over Chris Chambers on my roster.

True a second rounder is a steep cost for Chambers. But you gotta think of the position that Smith and Turner are in in SD. They are against the wall and my not get enought time to develop a new wide out.

I agree they needed someone. I just doubt that someone is Chambers. Of course, I suppose getting a true #1 in a mid-season trade is pretty difficult. We'll see whether he turns out to be worth a 2nd round pick--potentially a mid 2nd rounder unless San Diego really turns it around!

It will be interesting to see how Chambers reacts to not being the primary target. Maybe with a little less pressure he can improve. Of course he could also just start whining.

How would he not be the primary down the field target in SD? I mean Gates is great but I still gotta think that Chambers is the deep threat.

I didn't say he wouldn't be the number one downfield target. I meant he won't be the only productive offensive weapon. In fact won't be better than the third weapon of choice for rivers. While defenses are gameplanning to cover LDT and Gates Chambers can fly in under the radar and potentially have some decent numbers.

I think Chambers has always had potential, I sure think that he is a better number one receiver than Vincent Jackson. I think that the Chargers are in win now mode so they are not worried about that second round pick down the road.

Read football prospectus's notes on chambers sometimes... Honestly, its like chamber's stole Aaron Schatz girlfriend in high school because he legitimately hates the guy...

Haha :) I think Schatz is just repeating what the numbers tell him, and if you watch Chambers and his big games, the numbers are probably right. Chambers has terrible hands and doesn't seem to run patterns correctly, suggesting that he, well, sucks. He seems to succeed in spite of that -- maybe because CBs cheat and go for a pick, thinking Chambers will just be in the wrong spot or stonehands it.

Well...my roommate and I met Schatz a few months ago...and Chambers is one of the guys we asked him about (he brought it up during his lecture)...

anyways, his stats suggested that, like you said, he basically sucked...

I attempted to defend him with a few points...his coaches have been Dave Wannstedt and Nick Saban, not exactly NFL caliber minds (hence the reason they're in college...hellloooo recruiting) and his QBs have names like Fiedler, Feeley, Frerotte, Harrington and Green...not exactly the best in their field...

I really don't know... i mean, it is his job to know these things but a receiver really only as good as his QB and the system around him...

I think that this is a huge upgrade for San Diego... We are finally going to see how good Chambers really can be...

As long as Chambers can take a little bit of the focus off of Gates and LT out of the backfield in passing situations the Chargers get more than there value's worth in this trade. He may not put any numbers up that are astonishing but he makes you at least respect an outside threat which can do a lot to open up an offense, especially one like San Diego's who so many people just worry about stopping the run.

I agree the chargers needed an additional reciever down field. Losing Eric Parker for the entire season was a huge hit to the bolts. He accounted for very important plays during 3rd down conversions last season and to put another veteran will help this young team aspire. Randy Moss needed a team that would allow to make use of his abilities and New England was the opportunity.
