Mets v. Yankees Round 1

13

by user Awrigh01

With the first installment of the subway series, its time for baseball fans to discuss which team is better: the Metropolitans of New York or the the Evil Empire.

We need to do better than Mets manager Willie Randolph. Here's what he said in Newsday when asked which team is better: "We're better than the Yankees?" Randolph said. "What championships have we won yet, huh? We feel good about ourselves. We don't really compare ourselves to anyone."

Bullshit, Willie. You live in New York--the most competitive place in the world. Both teams exist under the intense lens of the New York media and are constantly being compared. You don't notice that? Hmmm. George-y doesn't think about whether the Yankees are better than the Mets while he's eating his calzones? Sure.

Let's cut the crap, its time for some serious Armchair debate.

Depends on the back of the Mets rotation. If Bannister and Maine can come back and put up an ERA+ in the 95-105 range, the Mets are better. Their pitching would be significantly stronger than the Yankees, especially given the Yankees' shoddy bullpen. While the Yanks have a significantly better lineup, with seemingly no holes, their pitching makes Kaz Matsui fearsome.

you make it sound like the Yankees have the Royals bullpen...Scott Proctor is having an excellent season, myers can get out any lefty, and last time i checked they still have that closer guy

Willie makes sense. Every time the mets beat the yanks in a series (the few times that its happened), we (Met fans) are happy for a few days, and then we come back to reality which is that we cant compare ourselves to the yankees because they win world series titles and we dont. so to tell u the truth, outside of the watercooler chatter next monday morning, for the rest of the year, this series is meaningless.

Did I miss something? Myers can get out any lefty? Were you out of the country when David Ortiz comes to bat? Once upon a time the Yankees were a great team. Now their fans are left saying "Hey, Scott Proctor's having a great season!"

Myers couldn't get out the Lefty that mattered -- David Ortiz. Until the Yankees have a solution for Ortiz the Red Sox will be the thorn in the Yankees side. Just like the Braves have been the thorn in the Mets side. That is until this year!

If you had to build a pitching staff out of the two teams, and you had seven RP slots, how many Yankees do you take? Mine has one, maybe two. Mariano is clear. Wagner, Heilman, Sanchez, and Bradford all make it easily. Then it becomes a question over whether you want a LOOGY like Myers, a marginal guy like Proctor, a decent long-man like Darren Oliver, or a headcase like Farnsworth/Julio.

Hey DNL, i can't find anywhere where i said the Yankees bullpen was better than the Mets, but apparently you did...all i said was that i thought they were better than "shoddy" as you first posted.

Mets have a good offensive lineup, better starting two, and a great bullpen. The Yanks are going down.

Seriously, this debate is dumb, i bet last year (nd many other years) at around this time, you couldve had this same conversations (yanks have holes; this is the mets year), and then either 1) the yanks make the playoffs and the mets dont, or 2) they both make it and the yanks win it all...it's May, the yanks will figure it out (through money) and the mets (probably) wont

no, last year, the Yanks had a much better team and the Mets kind-of-sucked. . . yet someone how the Mets managed to win. I guess that's because they have some heart and are not paid mercenaries . . .

The problem with the Yankees is definitely their pitching. Pean said "we still have that closer guy." The problem is that if our batting has a bad day, he'll have nothing to close.

Yanks still and always rule. They are in first despite all the injuries and the lackluster contribution by the unit. Their SPs are actually alright, though inconsistent. Mets are spiralling downward after losing zambrano and don't have the wallop to overcome that or any other significant injury.

For the record, Myers has only given up 1 run all year. Yes it was big, but other than that one instance he has been solid. Also, Chacon, Mussina, and Wang are a combined 14-3 with a 3.83 ERA. Pedro, Glavine and Trachsel (and I only use him because Bannister is hurt) are 13-6 with a 3.32 ERA. For the season, the Mets have the 3rd best team ERA in the MLB at 3.79 and the Yankees are 5th at 3.95. Not a whole lot of difference there. Offensively, however, the Yankees are 3rd in runs scored and 5th in BA while the Mets are 14th in runs scored and 16th in BA. This is why the Yankees will win this series.

With Pedro and Glavine, the Mets take at least 2 out of 3. As long as my former nemesis Jorge Julio doesn't mess it up.

Chachi, I think your argument speaks volumes but not in the way you want it to. The Mets, although being behind the Yankees in those two OFFENSIVE categories, still have a better record by a half game, so I'm a little confused why that proves they Yankees will win the series.

I wasn't offering proof they would win, just using the stats to back up my opinion rather then just making a blind prediction. Two more points: 1) I'll buy the DH arguement, but the Mets are still 8th in both categories in the NL and the Yankees are 3rd and 5th in the AL. 2)According to ESPN's strength of schedule indicator, the Mets have had the 23rd hardest schedule and the Yankees have had the 15th. I think that could easily account for a half game difference if not more.

I'll buy that. This all makes me wonder if the Dodgers and Angels care as much about who's the best team in LA as the Mets and Yankees and the Cubs and White Sox care about who the best team is in those respective cities.

You know, there's a reason the Red Sox got rid of Myers. He sucked. End of story. When did the Yankees start filling their bullpen with Boston castoffs?

They've been filling their starting lineup with former Sox players for years and they've all seemed to work out pretty well for them. Perhaps they thought, "Why stop there?"

Myers went 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 65 gams, 37 1/3 innings last season. Yeah that sucks! There was a reason the sox got rid of clemens, pedro too. Care to explain exactly what that was?

I just want to point out that for a lefty relief specialist, a guy who pitches a max 1 inning and more frequently to 1 or 2 batters, a 3.13 ERA is pretty bad. The more relevent statistic would be his success rate aginast lefties because that is the only reason he is in the league. If 3.13 ERA is a result of lefties having hit him well, I would agree he sucked. if he was enormously successful against elfties, but righties knowcked him around I would say he did not suck. Either way, this aspect of the debate started with Pean's silly comment that Myers can get out any lefty and Scott Proctor was having an awesome year. I will simpky point out that no, Myers can't get Ortiz out and we will see how he does against Delgado. And if you are defending your bullpen by singing the accolades of Scott Proctor you are in trouble. Now, let the games begin!!

3.13 isn't great but it doesn't totally suck, and agreed, would be better if it is < for lefties than vs righties. Now he's got 1.04, so besides the one pop to papi, that's pretty damn good. Much better than oliver who would be the met loogy equiv. Myers, Proctor, Villone, Farns and Mo = 5 reliable relievers w/ accolades. Heilman, Sanchez, Wagner, then what? Advantage Yanks and that's why they'll win the series.

Myers' lifetime ERA is 4.24, which is pretty sucky, especially for a relief specialist. His lifetime October ERA - an important number to teams like Boston and New York - is 9. While he can be very useful in very limited, special circumstances, he's not a generalist by any stretch of the imagination and right now he's not doing the one thing the Yankees signed him for (getting David Ortiz out). So, he sucks. Any further questions?
