Mets are beast of NL for second straight season?

With the New York Mets 10-4 whopping of the Cincinnati Reds today in Great American Ballpark, the Mets have the best record in the National League at (77-60) through 167 games. Second to the Mets, is the San Diego Padres who beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-2 today, to up their record to (76-61),  and took  control of the NL West lead. In 2006, the Mets finished the season with a record of (97-65), 9 games better than both the Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers for best record in the NL. If the Mets finish off with the best record in the NL for the second straight season, I assume it will be the first time that the Mets have accomplished this feat.

I'm wondering from you guys to find this out: Who was the last team (whether AL or NL) to finish with the best record two consecutive seasons, and who was the last NL team to do it, if its ever been done, which I'm sure it has. It'll be awesome if you guys could answer this trivia question for me.

The Cardinals had the best record in the NL in 2004 (105-57) and 2005 (100-62). The Braves also did it from 2002-2003 with a record of 101-59 and 101-61, respectively (I'm assuming 2 games weren't made up in 2002 because they had no impact on postseason seeding/division winners). The last team in the AL to do so was the Yankees in 2003 and 2004. Each season they were 101-61.

It IS indeed the first time that happens with the Mets franchise. In fact, they've never been in first place twice in a row. I can't wait to see how the season ends for the Mets. I have a feeling they're going to walk away with the NL East division with just a little bit smaller of a lead than they had last year.

Thanx JMFlyer1454 for clarifying that for me. I didn't realize it was that recent. I guess I forget, who else was in our division. -Kwass

If by "this team" you are referring to the San Diego Padres. Then, yes, they are going to the World Series.

The only team in the NL that can hang with the Mets in the long run is the Padres. Their pitching staff and improving hitting makes them dangerous in October.
