Mets Didn't Give Milledge a Chance

by SportsGerbil

Earlier today, the New York Mets dealt former stud prospect Lastings Milledge to the Washington Nationals for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider. Schneider will replace Johnny Estrada as the top catcher on the depth chart just days after Estrada was acquired from Milwaukee. Church will most likely platoon in right with Endy Chavez. From being planned as another star to go along with David Wright and Jose Reyes, Milledge has become another Alex Escobar.

Had the likes of Johan Santana, Dan Haren, and Erik Bedard been on the block a year or two ago, Milledge would have been one of the top players requested from the Mets in a trade for one of those three. Unfortunately, Milledge dealt with injuries earlier this season, and when he did return the Mets apparently couldn't take his attitude problems. His stock has hit rock bottom to only garner a journeyman catcher and a backup/platoon outfielder.

Personally, I think this is an awful trade for the Mets. I don't know if Milledge is going to become anything more than a so-so outfielder, but for Church and Schneider? Milledge's upside greatly trumps those two, as he could definitely become a big time player. Schneider won't be much better than Estrada would have been, and yes, Church had 43 doubles last year, but he has done very little in his career at the age of 29.

Milledge was given up on way too soon, and the reason is because of his questionable attitude. I am here to defend what have been his biggest follies in the eyes of Willie Randolph, Omar Minaya, and company. Last June, Milledge was pumped after hitting his first career homerun to send the game to extra innings that he gave high fives to a few fans down the right field line on his way out to the field. I didn't think that was a big deal at ALL. Randolph is old school and believes that shows up the other team. Come on Willie! Giving a couple high fives is nothing compared to a pitcher shouting after a strikeout or a batter posing while hitting a homerun. The kid was excited, give him a break! He did continue excited celebrations in his year and a half, but if you've watched a Mets game you usually would see Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes dancing in the dugout. It's the times we live in, Willie couldn't handle that. I don't see the difference between his celebrating and Reyes's this past year. It is just that one named Jose Reyes gets to stay.

The worst thing Milledge did was appear in a rap video in which the rapper used derogatory lyrics. Bad judgment! But what 23 year old doesn't make mistakes? The Mets did not give Milledge a chance to perform. They just wanted rid of someone who I thought was not as bad as the media, team, etc. made him out to be. With a full season of at bats, I think Milledge will be a 25-35 homerun, .270 type hitter. That will trump Ryan Church/Endy Chavez's output with the Mets. Terrible trade. The Mets don't have many chips anyway, so trading someone whose value could rise over the next year or so does not make sense. Anyone with a brain knows you don't sell low!

It's called clearing a position for a better player.

And, the Mets gave Milledge more chances than just about anyone they've ever drafted. He got more chances than Shawn Abner for chrissakes.

How about researching before you write next time?

Kelsdad is right. I interviewed Milledge over the three springs before he went major league. If his talent had grown right alongside his mouth, he would be a great player today. On our MLN FAB50 baseball rankings, we had him at 24 in 2005 and 38 in 2004 because he had great tools, and he was a student of the game. Fast money, and fast fame rot the bottom out of a lot of aspiring careers, and Milledge is one of them.

I think the Mets should've gotten rid of Milledge but I just wish it was for a different player. He was a pain and a distraction and didn't run to get the ball off of Dontrelle Willis, but trading him for Ryan Church?Brian Schneider? That was the best they could do.The Mets dangled Milledge for the likes of Santana,Bedard, and Haren and they get Church and Schneider. Give me a break.

Kels, Church isn't better than Milledge. And I agree Mets82, they should have used him for a chip to get a frontline starter.

They weren't going to get diddly-squat for Milledge in the way of a starter. That would require Milledge to be worth something to the other organization, and, based on the scouting reports that I've seen, no one is wowed. You keep putting him up on the pedestal like he's David Wright. We did a couple of pieces at MLN on David too, back in his days coming up, and the two are like night and day. Wright is focused, self-disciplined, and a player's player. Milledge is more like Elijah Dukes (Rays). Sixth tool (between the ears) is not focused.

You guys don't think that the Mets tried to dangle Milledge as a chip to get a Santana or a Haren? I'd bet that the Mets had tried to get something better for him, and the other teams were uninterested. I'm not saying this was the best thing to do, but if the Mets really wanted to get rid of him immediately , this trade is about the best they could get for him.

I never said Church was better than Milledge. And I'm betting Church isn't on the Mets opening day roster, either. Again, a little thought goes a long ways.

I agree, Kelsdad. A lot more goes into trades than the talent of the players. The Mets needed a catcher that is good defensively (Castro and Estrada aren't great behind the plate), which is where Schneider comes in. Church is a decent player, and while not in the same talent stratosphere as Milledge, but he's good against righties (.287/.360/.506 in 2007) and the Mets can platoon him with Endy Chavez as a right fielder. What I hope will happen is the Mets will spin Church off for some bullpen help (the Cubs need a right fielder if they don't get Fukudome, and the Mets need a right-hander, maybe a Church-for-Michael Wuertz trade?) and the Mets give the right field job to Carlos Gomez.

Church will be holding his services in New Orleans with the Zephyrs. Remember that all clubs make trades not only to help the major league club, but to position players in the minor league system as well. Catchers of any good quality are in generally short supply. Can Church be an effective every-day in Triple-A, and a MLB backstop? Yep. Let him win a few POW awards in the PCL or a Triple-A all-star nod and we'll see if he's Shea-bound. Right now the only really decent catcher that I've seen that's major league ready was Kurt Suzuki with Sacramento (A's). These guys should wear the "endangered species" horns. If your kid plays baseball and can hit, start buying him LoDuca jerseys as a hint.

The Mets clearly gave up on Milledge, but to say he didn't get a fair shake is ridiculous. As a player, he had the respect of his teammates, but he didn't as a person. Having someone in the clubhouse who acts like he's been an All Star for 10 years, demands the same star treatment given Delgado, Beltran and Pedro, and whose work ethic is questionable at best is infintely worse a situation then to how he performs on the field.

Like Tmil said, the Mets tried to trade him for guys like Santana and Willis and Miguel Cabrera and so on, and they were all turned down? You think there might be alternative reasons other than what he does on the field?

Well, now you know.

Very simple here.

Castro has starter skills, but can't stay healthy, and has never played more than 99 games in a season. There is a reason for this. He can not be counted on as a starter.

Schneider can hit 8th for all I care. Who else in the lineup will? (Perhaps Delgado). His defense is certainly better that LoDuca and Castro.

Church will be better over the next year or two than Milledge. By then, several of the Mets better prospects will have aged and grown and be ready to come up and take his place.

Long-term, Milledge might be the better half of this deal, but for the Mets, as a TEAM, this makes them better for the next year or so, and lets them wait on other prospects, including Gomez and Fernando Martinez (a top 10 prospect).

Don't get your knickers in a twist. It's not a world beater deal, but it's not doomsday either. Wait till the end of the offseason before we punch Omar's ticket.

Give Milledge half a year in the big leagues (before Fernando is ready)...if he does well, you can trade him for a Blanton/Haren type at the deadline, depending on how high you want to shoot. If he really blows, you still probably don't do worse than this deal.

Maybe its whats milledge needs to be shipped off to obscurity in washington..the guy was a 5 tool player with a 2 cent attitude but things change and he could mature..the mets obviously wouldnt get a haren or santana for a guy who hasnt shown "great" numbers at the major league level and no one is gonna throw away a quality starter on some punk kid and Kwitt said it fernando could be ready midway next year so why not hold onto him until then and get something of plus value in return without hurting the team

I'm sure they tried to trade him around for better players, but you don't trade or sell low in any facet of life. Let him gain value, and if he doesn't? Well I'm sure you can still acquire the likes of Brian Schneider. The Mets made a foolish mistake here by trading Milledge. Schneider sucks! LoDuca did just fine behind the dish. A year and a half is not alot of time, especially when you miss 1/2 of it due to injuries. Milledge only got about 300 ABs the last two years.

yea, but milledge also raped a girl in HS, was found to have used racial slurs on a rap CD, failed miserably when it came to being respectful and willing to grow, and statistically was no better than an average prospect. I wish we had traded him for more, but I don't regret getting rid of him. His teammates hated his guts last year, he was a nuisance, and he had to go.

Being traded may be good for Milledge. He will be away from the New York media distractions and may be ready to play a full season for the first time without any pressure.

You don't trade a guy when his stock is low. Its that simple. Milledge is 22 years old, he has a long time before people give up on his talent. Look how many teams were willing to trade for Adrian Gonzalez. Took him a long time to finally come around. The mets traded for a guy who can't hit and a platoon player. Have you seen Church's numbers against Lefties? The point that others have made, and I am going to make again, is that you give the guy the chance to rehabilitate his reputation and if he can't do it, a trade like this is still going to be available. The notion that Church, at 29 a platoon player for what was basically a minor league team, would have the same value as a trading chit as Milledge is just laughable. I am starting to think that Minaya should get fired. He has done a pretty poor job. Trading Heath Bell for Ben Johnson. Henry Owens and Matt Lidstrom for Jason Vargas. Giving Chad Bradford's 3 year deal to Schoenweis. Signing Mota to a big contract after he got caught using steroids, failing to get an impact pitcher at last year's deadline and now trading Milledge for the absolute least he could possibly bring back in a trade. Is his record not worse than Steve Phillips (who by the way did NOT make the Kazmir trade!)

Omar is looking foolish this off-season. He seems overworked up about the catching position. Now he has three mediocre catchers. Schneider has been declining defensively. I don't see why they just didn't resign lo duca and move milledge for pitching, bullpen or starting, the mets' pitching completely broke down last year and they had done zero to address that except trade mota and lose glavine.

Consensual sex with someone underage? Much different than RAPE even if some states dont think so. Should have used better judgment of course, but thats got nothing to do with his Mets career.

Wow. You're the guy that MLB loves. No scruples. Just play? Even if you buy into that load of bilge about his legal troubles, it shows a lack of judgment that unfortunately has not improved with age. Milledge has had some great opportunities. Not taking advantage of them is a whole other form of abuse... of his natural abilities.

Hardly, I know the difference between the media blowing a situation out of control and something that is really wrong. Has Milledge done things to hurt his value? Absolutely. But it isn't as bad as Mike and the Maddog or the NY papers make it out to be. He's a kid with alot of ability that they shouldn't trade for nothing. Trade him for value, or kick him in the butt to get in line. Giving high fives to fans or excessively celebrating a homer to go up 8-1 isn't a big deal.

Couldn't they have tried to use him as trade bait for Dontrelle Willis? Just a thought. I think Omar really dropped the ball this week. Santana to Red Sox, Haren to Yankees. Livian Hernandez to replace Glavine. Not an upgrade, at all.

Actually one of the worst things Milledge did was to dance and celebrate in front of the Marlins with Reyes the second last game of the season. I am sure the Marlins had plenty of reasons to be all fired up in that last game.
