Mets Acquire Shawn Green

13
Vote

During the 2nd inning of the Mets-Cardinals game the announcers stated that the Mets have acquired Shawn Green. Although they said that the deal was yet to be announced, they confirmed what has been rumored since the trading deadline. Green will likely take over for Lastings Milledge who is likely to be sent down to AAA. Of course, Milledge might remain on the roster instead of Michael Tucker until Cliff Floyd returns from the DL. Green's bat should be a welcome addition to the Mets lineup as he will likely slide into the 6 spot in the lineup. Most importantly, the Mets finally have a player to highlight during their annual kosher night at Shea.

The Mets also received undisclosed financial considerations. (Update: The Mets receive $6.3 million from the D'Backs, of which $500k is this year. For 2007, Green is owed $9m with a $2m buy-out.) The Mets sent the Diamondbacks AAA lefty Evan MacLane. To make room for Green on the 40 man roster, the Mets have designated OF Victor Diaz.

A total of about 20 million. Green has 13+ million left on his deal and they gave up 6+ mil in cash.

The trade isn't even official yet, but the Mets probably had to take on just about all of his contract.

The Mets got at least $1m in the deal; otherwise, it'd have not required Selig's OK.

In the end, this was a no brainer deal for the Mets. Milledge has stunk both defensively and offensively in right. Green has had an okay year, but he should be a stabilizing force in RF. Plus, the Mets are going to need all the offense they can get if they are going to continue to lose starting pitching.

If the trade deadline has been passed, how can this deal still go through? Why doesn't MLB make a strict rule - no trading after this date. It seems to be a conditional deadline.

Green cleared waivers. Any team could have claimed him and then Arizona could have pulled him back. Once a player clears waivers they are free to be traded. The trade deadline is only a deadline for trades made without players clearing waivers. Makes it a little anti-climactic, perhaps, but its rare you see a huuuuuuuuuge deal after the deadline. Usually it is like this deal, where there is a huge transfer of salary or other negative about the player being traded.

Remember a couple of years ago Manny Ramirez went through waivers because of his huge salary and the constant "Manny being Manny"? Waivers work like this: Team says "hey, anyone who wants this guy, you can claim him." All the other teams get the opportunity with a specific window of time (I forget how long) to claim him. If they do, the original team can either rescind the waiver or let the player go. If they rescind the waiver, the player has to remain on the team's 40-man roster for the rest of the year. However, if no team claims the player, the original team is free to trade that player (assuming we are only discussing post-deadline since you don't need waivers before the deadline).

Interestingly, players who have been sent to the minors too many times have to be Designated for Assignment (DFA). As part of the Mets deal for Green, Victor Diaz was DFA. They needed room on their 40-man for Green so someone had to go. If another team claims Diaz the Mets will either have to let him go, or send another player down and keep Diaz in the 40. Will be interesting if one of their prospective opponents in the playoffs try to do something sneaky there.

I believe Tampa claimed a player the Red Sox wanted to DFA this year to get back at them for some shady dealings.

Thankyou for your explanation. I think it would still make more sense if they fixed July 31 as a deadline, and forced the rosters to be kept the same until the end of the season. That way, you have two months to get the feel of the team, and somebody just walked in to claim the spoils.

Look at it this way. The waivers system exists because you have to be able to move players up and down from the Majors and minors. If the league didn't allow these trades, they would probably happen anyway ("I'll drop the guy you want and you drop the guy I want and we pull them back if anyone screws it up"). THe only way to change it would be to require teams to set their 40-man roster for the playoffs by Aug 1 instead of Aug 31. In baseball, players are so in-flux because of injuries etc., that this would be untenable. Like I said before, the big deals don't happen after the deadline, it's really just shifting of minor pieces.

If they have a 40-man roster then they should be able to move people from the minors to fill the places. They shouldn't lose 15 players to injury in three months. So they can just push players from the 40 to 25, and any injuries are kept on the 40 even if inactive for the period of August 1 to the end. That seems simpler.

I really don't see how this can be defined as a "good" trade. Green sucks and is clearly on the downside of his career, and his power numbers have dropped materially in the past 2 years. He is playing out what is clearly an above-market contract, and I just don't see how this is the guy you want starting in RF for the next few seasons. Sources say the Mets pushed very hard to get Moises Alou from SF but the Giants were unwilling (another old player with injury problems). Clearly the Mets are desparate. This trade was done because Minaya panicked at the trade deadline and dealt X Nady to Pitt for 2 worthless pitchers, which left him without a solid and cheap young starting outfielder who could provide some reliable pop at the bottom the order. Now you have an older, more expensive guy with less power! Great series of moves by Omar!

His stats lately have been better than Diaz' stats. It's an upgrade in the OF department. Since it appears Glavine will only be out for a week or two, and other recent moves to strengthen their bullpen, the Mets have definitely upgraded overall over the last day or two.

I'm going to assume you meant his stats are better than Milledge's, which they are. Green is going to hit 6 or 7th and considering the Mashers in front of him, is .283 average will drive in a pile of runs hopefully. The Mets are making a playoff run this year and while this won't be the move that wins them the World Series (does anyone think the NL has a chance?) it might be a move that helps solidify the chance of them getting there.

Green may not be the RF of the future, but at $6 million next year, he's a damn decent option if Floyd is gone (probably).

I think you are way off base here. Green is a better player than Nady. Oliver Perez alone is a better player than Nady so that deal was a total steal. You are talking about a young power throwing lefty with 20 win potential. This was an amazingly lopsided deal for the Mets. They got Roberto Hernandez to boot. Sounds to me like you are a Mets hater AF because there is no other explanation for your post.

News flash, Oliver Perez stinks. He's 2-10 with an ERA over 6. I know they were desperate for pitching, and rightly so, but to call this a "steal"? That's laughable. How do you steal a pitcher who stinks?

I'm not a Mets hater at all. I respect your view that my analysis is off base, but I was just trying to point out that this Green trade became necessary only as a result of the bad trade at the deadline. Clearly you place more value on Perez than I do, and maybe you will turn out to be right in the end. But as of now, Perez is a completely broken reclamation project and Hernandez is servicable at best. Hard for me to really understand why you think Perez is a better player than Nady. Not even clear that Perez ever makes it back to the show!

Actually, he's been throwing pretty well in AAA. The Nady wasn't a bad deal because it was a necessary deal. The Sanchez injury forced his hand. If Duaner hadn't gotten in that particular taxi, you'd probably see Nady still on the team.

Probably just over-excited with his last game in AAA. Took a no-hitter into the 7th and struck out 12 I think. I also don't think that much of Nady. He is a .260 hitter and a platton outfielder on nost major league teams (that of course excludes the Pirates).

Wait. Didn't the Mets get Guilermo Mota somehow through this deal? I seem to remember that he was thrown in. If that's indeed true, couple him with Green's great hitting in the divisional series and it was a very good deal for the Mets. ~cc~

They made a good point on Baseball tonight yesterday. Though the Mets are running away with the NL East, they are week in starting pitching which wins playoff games. Since there is no pitching available, they need to boost their offense. As the Yankees proved this past weekend, sometimes you need to score 11 runs a game in order to win. Green, and maybe Alou, are proven players that boost the offense at least a little. They are the best available out there.
