Mets Acquire Luis Castillo

Amazing move by the Mets in my opinion. With Jose Valentin gone, the Mets were desperate to make a move. This was definitely relieving for the Mets. And you thought the Braves were going to do good with Teixeira? The Mets did really well coming back with a shocker for the Braves and the Phillies. The Phillies got Iguchi, sure, but I think they need to make another major move, mainly for a pitcher. Their pitching is killing them right now, and in order to stay in playoff contention, they need to make at least one more move.

I like it. He's a great defender -- 20 errors over 500 games? -- and puts up a solid OBP from an offensive black hole.

Crap-tillo is pretty worhtless without his speed. I think this is a bad move.

You don't think he's an improvement over Ruben Gotay?

What about his defense? Hitting? .304 AVG, .356 OBP. His defense is still good. .992 FP.

I agree with Justin. Crap-tillo was unnecessary. The mets need bullpen help and/or a big OF bat.

Well, i don't know enough about Gotay...if Castillo is better, than I guess its a decent trade, however I don't think the mets gave up all that much...

As far as Pen help...its gonna cost you a nice prospect...a big bat may be cheaper...

BTW, even if the mets are 3 games ahead of the phils...i just remember there's this thing called the wild card...the phils trail the NL west (yep all 3!) by 1 game...now the season is interesting...

Gotay is a better hitter and Castillo has 9 stolen bases all year. Also, errors don't say much about a player's fielding ability, so you can throw the .992 fielding percentage out the window. Range is a better indicator of a player's defensive ability, especially at second base where arm strength isn't even that important. Castillo's speed has dropped off in recent years, so his defense is likely overrated. Even if he is a Gold Glove caliber second baseman, how does he help the Mets? They need hitting and now they're replacing Gotay and his .886 OPS with Castillo (.708 OPS). Sure he does a decent job getting on base, but if he doesn't steal bases, how much does that help? He's just going to hit singles and get stranded by the Mets abysmal clutch hitting.

Pretty nice move for the Mets... Castillo isn't great but he provides nice defense at 2B and is still decent at getting on base. Plus, they didn't really have to give up much, as neither of the prospects looks all that promising. As a Twins fan I'll miss watching Luis play.

Luis was great here in Minnesota, The Mets received a great player, who goes out to win day in and day out.

While the Mets gave up next to nothing to get Castillo, I don’t see the trade as improving the team at all. Gotay has a higher OBP, SLG, HR, RBI (in 200 fewer AB's). Castillo brings a little speed (only marginally better than Gotay's), but don't they already have that Reyes guy?

aside from that half-web gem last night... luis is garbage. 18 rbis with a team that had a .330 obp??? come on, we should've tried to do better. fortunately, those two prospects haven't really gained much experience in the minors or we'd be in for another kazmir mistake. castillo's also dominican (no surprise there omar). we need a temporary bat to counter the carloses underproduction, or we should link annual salaries to bat production. btw who's the mets captain these days?

Was he the #4 hitter when he had those 18 rbi's? Career-wise he has a lot more runs than RBI's which I would expect from someone who bats torward the top of the order.
