I think my team can beat DNL's. I know I have been gone for a long while, but here is my return . . . with fanfare.
Starting Lineup
2006 Jose Reyes (SS)
Launched himself to the top of the best players in the game. 19 HRs, 81 RBIs hitting leadoff. 30 doubles, 17 triples, .300 average. Terror on the basepaths stealing 64 bags. The heart and soul of the team. As Jose goes, so go the Mets.
1983 Mookie Wilson (CF)
Hit .276 with 54 SBs.
1987 Strawberry (RF)
39 dingers, 104 RBIS, hit .284 and added 36 SBs.
1999 Piazza (C)
Duh. Best year ever from a catcher. 40 HRs/124 RBIs/.303
1996 Gilkey (LF)
I didn't realize he had a year this good. 30/117/.317 and even swiped 17 bases
2005 Wright (3B)
Best 3bman in Mets history already. 27 HRs, 102 RBIs, .306 Avg and 17 SBs.
1982 Kingman (1B)
37 HRS/99 RBIS/but hit .204. Great power numbers on a 65 win team. Ill take the power and sacrafice the avergae in the 7 slot.
1984 Backman (2B)
One of my favorites of all time. Hit .280, swiped 32 bags. Good guy to have hitting in front of the pitcher.
Starting Rotation
1985 Gooden
No brainer. 24-4/1.53 ERA/268 Ks
1988 Cone
Terrific year. 20-3/2.22 ERA/213 Ks
1990 Viola
The old man won 20 games with a 2.67 ERA
2000 Leiter
Carried the Mets to the WS. 16-8, 3.20 ERA 200Ks in 208 innings.
1986 Ojeda
The forgotten man of the rotation as 4th starter. Went 18-5 with a 2.57 ERA.
Relief Pitching
Closer - 1998 Franco
Taking Benitez would be too much because of his playoff failures. Franco closed out 38 games this year and had a respectable (for him) 3.62 ERA. He always made the game interesting, but he usually got the job done.
RP - 1991 Alejandro Pena
Pitched in 44 games, going 6-1 with a 2.71 ERA. I will take that out of the pen.
RP - 1994 Josias Manzanillo
Had a 2.66 ERA and struck out 48 in 47 innings
RP - 2001 Turk Wendell
In the lean years for the Mets provided wacky entertainment. His 3.51 ERA was nothing to write home about, but watching him in the dugout is worth having him on the team.
RP - 2003 Dave Weathers
Weathers was an important part of the pen along with Benitez and Stanton. had a 3.08 ERA, but as a workhorse he went 87 innings.
RP - 2002 Grant Roberts
Roberts had a great year out of the pen. In 45 innings had a stellar 2.20 ERA. You could make a case for Strickland or Weathers, but Weathers next year was better and Strickland had too high an ERA.
Bench Players
2004 Ty Wigginton (Middle Infield)
The Year he became a fan favorite. Played 1b, 2b and 3b. In 312 ABS, hit 12 HRs, and had a respectable .285 BA.
1993 Joe Orsulak (Util OF)
Another guy to love. Played all 3 OF positions (and 1B). Hit .284
1997 Todd Pratt (Backup C)
Much better than DNL's Charlie O'Brien who hit as well as I do. Pratt was decent with the bat, hitting .283.
1989 Mark Carreon (Pinch Hitter)
In 133 ABs hit 6 bombs for 16 RBIs but had a very impressive .308 avg.
1995 Tim Bogar (Defensive Replacement)
A wiry player. played a game at every position but pitcher and catcher. Hit .290 in 145 ABs. Not bad off the bench.
1992 Vince Coleman (Other OFer/Pinch runner)
In limited duty Coleman stole 24 bags.
