Messaging friends...

How do you get this thing to work? Do you simply click the right hand edit link and type at the bottom of the page?

Why can't there just be a box that says "Message" where you type up whatever and then click a "Submit" button and then it automatically tells the person who messaged them and at what time? Wouldn't this be more efficient?
