Born on May 30, 1936 in San Diego, California, Mel Nelson (Melvin Frederick Nelson) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins over the course of his 6 year career. Nelson broke into the bigs on September 27, 1960 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 5.30 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched in 1963, his rookie year.
