MegECass110's QB Rankings

17

by user MegECass110

I preface this column by saying I fully expect most of you to tear these to shreds. But that's what makes it fun.

SI's Peter King, one of the best football writers in the country and one of my favorite sportswriters period, recently ranked the starting QBs for all 32 NFL teams. Some of his readers went bananas and disagreed with him. I happen to think his rankings are pretty solid, with a few corrections, given my esteemed judgement and other "factors" that may or may not have anything to do with football.

Of course, at the top, we have the two no-brainers, Manning and Brady. We can debate who is better until the cows come home. I'm ridiculously biased, since Brady is quite possibly the love of my life, but unlike other Pats fans, I like Manning. I really do. They're quite similar, actually: class act, hardworking, teammates love him, captain, leader, reads defenses extremely well, adored by their respective fan bases.

Until this past February, one thing Brady had that Manning didn't was a ring, three, to be exact. But it had to happen sometime, and now they can both call themselves Super Bowl champions. King has Manning 1 and Brady 2, and I have a hard time disagreeing with him. But these are MY rankings, and the fact that Brady happens to be the most beautiful man ever to walk on this Earth, I have him ahead. And I would STILL take Brady if I had to win one game.

1. Brady

2. Manning

The battle for third is also close: Palmer vs. Brees. King has Brees at 3 and Palmer at 4. The rankings are a projection for the 2007 season. There's no debating Brees had a ridonculous year in 2006, with basically a new shoulder. But, I have to consider the level of competition: AFC vs. NFC. Palmer also had excellent numbers, against much better defenses in the AFC North division.

Then again, Brees took up an opportunity not to many other players would have: reviving a franchise in New Orleans trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina. The Saints were the story of the NFL, getting all the way to the NFC championship game. This one is nearly a tie. But, Palmer is younger, and plays with my favorite non-Patriot receiver in the league, Chad Johnson, and he's GORGEOUS. Like I said, my rankings, my way.

3. Palmer

4. Brees

This is where King and I start to drift. At 5-8, King has Bulger, Hasselbeck, Young and Rivers. Bulger at 5 makes sense-very consistent, plays with great receivers. As much as I love Hasselbeck for being a BC guy, he is on the downside of his career. I think Rivers had the most quiet good season of anyone last year.

As much as I appreciate what Young does with his legs and winning games, he still needs a lot of work before he becomes an elite QB. McNabb does have some durability issues, but before he got hurt last season he was absolutely on fire. I'd have him over Young right now-he's gonna be 30, same age as Brady.

5. Bulger

6. Rivers

7. Hasselbeck

8. McNabb

As much of a beast as Calvin Johnson is and what a great offensive mind Mike Martz is, I can't put Kitna in my top 10. I just can't. Give me a gunslinger and Carrie Underwood's boyfriend in front of him.

9. Cutler

10. Romo

11. Kitna

If you haven't picked up on it already, I heart the AFC. I'll be shorter from here on out.

12. Young-A winner, but no one to throw to (David Givens, this means you).

13. Pennington-Healthy and new security blanket Thomas Jones.

14. Roethlisberger-Healthy, hopefully mentally right after the motorcycle crash.

15. McNair-Old.

16. Favre-Older. And annoying.

17. Leinart-Poised for a breakout season.

18. Delhomme-This hurts, I've always liked him, but he didn't look the same last year.

19. Losman-Had a surprisingly good year last year, will only get better.

20. Garcia-Don't know why the Eagles didn't resign him, chip on his shoulder will help.

21. Schaub-One game he started against the Pats, he went nuts, we'll see how he does full-time.

22. Smith-Improving more and more, no real WR threat though.

23. Green-Don't know if he'll be the same after concussion and with a crappy offense.

24. E. Manning-Consistency, Eli, say it with me...consistency.

25. Campbell-Potential, needs more time to get used to the position.

26. Grossman-Yeah, he won the NFC, but again, consistency.

27. Leftwich-I like it when he gets sacked, because then I call him Byron Sandwich.

28. Frye-Lots of potential on offense, but it's Cleveland. Let's not kid ourselves.

30. Vick-Sorry excuse for an NFL quarterback. Most overrated player of my generation.

I don't think it's fair to include Jackson and Croyle, because they hardly played. I can't judge them based on such a small sample size.

So there you have it. Make of it what you will, but I stand by my list of the most high-profile position in all of sports.

He's a runningback with a strong arm. I saw him in person at a BC game against VT, and he was an amazing athlete. But that is all he will ever be to me. He HAS to show me he can be an accurate, efficient, consistent passer before I believe otherwise.

Many people disagree with me about this, but in my OPINION, Maning is slightly overrated. Brady can spread the ball around better and always gives the reciever a chance no matter who he's throwing too. Manning has perhaps the best recievers in the game where he just has to throw it near them and they'll catch it. My theory will be proven this year as Brady has great WR's this year. Great job on the rankings though, a little harsh on Vick, but I agree with you. The top five are right on target!

Overrated? I wouldn't go that far. Manning doesn't need to spread the ball around because his receivers are so good they can be relied upon consistently. People are wondering about Moss not being happy with the number of catches, I think he'll get a solid number because Brady will get comfy with him and throw the ball to the open receiver (which, more often than not, will be Moss). You hear it all the time, Brady's favorite receiver is the open one. Thanks for the comments.

sure, he owned Seattle and NO in the playoffs where it mattered (sure he lacked consistency, but seriously, while the whole country saw his two worst performances, no one remembers the first 5 games of the season, the MVP of the month, Madden's Favre comparisons, etc...) If he doesn't throw off of his back foot and gets his consistency down, maybe then he'll be lauded for his talent. I didn't like what I saw when it was bad at all, but I saw him play well and am not giving up on the guy... yet. Afterall, He's the first promising, decent QB we've had in Chicago in a decade.

Last time I checked, QB performance is pretty indicative to team wins and losses. For example, Manning and the Colts defense of the past. They STILL won 13 games with HARDLY ANY defense. Manning put the entire team on his back and scored his way to victory. So let me get this straight: if Manning is legendary on the Patriots, then what do you think Brady would be on the Colts? Seriously. Wouldn't he be in Manning territory statswise? Wouldn't you consider Harrison, Wayne, and Edge/Addai an upgrade over Branch/Caldwell, Gaffney and Maroney/Dillon? Both QBs are legendary, no matter where they play.

He's a little more than a game manager, I think. He looks like a game manager-efficient, not flashy, few turnovers-when he has the best football player in the world carrying the ball for him. He showed flashes of brilliance though, most notably a 21-point second half comeback at Cincinnati. He made the Pro Bowl in front of Brady, too. He's only going to get better.

He fell off HARD after week 5. If anything, the injury was good news for the Eagles, because it stopped the potential train wreck and allowed them to win the division.

Roethlisberger is coming off back-to-back below average seasons (even though he won the Super Bowl in 2005, he wasn't nearly the QB he was in 2004, and 2006 he was injured/stupid for not wearing a helmet), we'll see how he does when fully healthy and three years of experience. Pennington has exactly ONE full, healthy season in five years as a starter, and plays in one of the best defensive divisions in football. And Vince Young needs to throw more touchdowns than interceptions (12 TD, 13 INT last year), have a QB rating above 70 and complete more than 51.5% of his passes before I consider him ahead of Romo. No one can deny the spark Romo provided for the Boys last year; they were as good as dead with Bledsoe behind center. Even though he fizzled, this year he has a new coach, and he still has T.O. and a solid offense to work with, which you can't say for Vince Young. Playing a full season will test the skill of both QBs.

You've got a point about young but I'll counter with this...

His first game doesn't count (4 total attempts?), game 2 he went 7 for 20 but backupped a certain PSU QB until he sucked as well...he didn't even play in the 3rd game...so really our buddy VY didn't show up until Week 4...

With that said, even if you throw out the worst game he had after week 4..(week 9 vs J-ville, a 30 QB rating) he was only twice above 100 in rating (weeks 12 and 16) and twice above 80 (6 & 8, with the bye in between)

Romo has 6 games above 100 and 2 above 80...not to mention, his worst game (against philly, heh) was still about a 45...much better than a few of VYs...

I think VY is better, but I understand this

Fine, you've got me on Roethlisberger: I didn't realize his 2nd season (SB season) was so good, I just have his poor SB performance etched in my memory.

Pennington has put up an ok QB rating (I consider 90 to be good), but his career record as a starter is 21-16, and he's only 2-2 in the postseason.

So Vince Young did more than Tony Romo last season? Did the Titans make the playoffs? Young has a lot less talent around him, and it shows. I think Young has a lot of potential with his athleticism (here's to hoping he's not another Mike Vick), but he is a ways away from being a top 10 QB.

On the fact of the Brady and Manning debate it is to close to call. Both have their pro's and con's one has more rings and the other more records. One has more to work with the other actually has to distrbute the ball along better. But hopefully we can all see witch QB is better by the end of the 2007 NFL season with the arrival of Moss into New England. Another thing on your rankings is the fact you have Bulger, Rivers and Hasselbeck all rated ahead of Donovan Mcnabb who was having an MVP like season before going down with an injury early in the 2006 season. As well as has proven him self around the league unlike Rivers who has tons on talent surounding him and would be a wash up with out Tomlinson and Gates to back him up. One more thing give Vick a break he will get better soon and just beeds less prussure put on himyou have Charlie Frye and JP Losman in front of him who have done less then him and have no talent what so ever and will never acomplish anything in their NFL Carrers. That is all but the top ten are ok.

I know how good McNabb is, but he's 30 years old and he keeps getting hurt over the past few years. I have concerns about his durability, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he puts up MVP numbers.

I know Rivers has Gates and Tomlinson. But he can't throw the ball to Gates every time. See if you can name SD's starting wideouts last year off the top of your head. We've been talking about doing more with less; other than Gates, Rivers has basically no one, and he still put up decent passing numbers. People will say Vick will get better every single year. This is his 7th year in the league. He's had 7 chances, and he hasn't taken advantage of any of them. His career completion % is less than 54%, and his QB rating is 76. He has talent, no doubt, it's matter or turning that talent into being a polished passer.

I have a hard time saying JP Losman has no talent when he gets taken in the first round and had a QB rating of 94.4 the last 4 games of the season. It's a little tougher with Charlie Frye. Vick is more talented than those 2 players, but Losman is a better QB.
