This is the thirteenth edition of the popular Meet the Users series, where The Beast will be interviewing a particular ArmchairGM user. The goal for the series is to allow all users to know each other better. The thirteenth edition goes to Romiezzo
1. How did you learn about ArmchairGM?
I learned about ArmchairGM about 4 1/2 months ago. One day, while I was on the MySpace Baseball Group (like I usually was before I was on ArmChair GM), DNL wrote a topic about AGM. This was the message that he gave me: ‘’“You want to write for us? www.armchairgm.com if you do. We're a group blog, a sports wiki (like wikipedia), and a social network for sports fans. So, take a look and let me know what you think.’’ From then on, I fell in love with it. Thank you DNL, Roblefko, Pean, and Awrigh01.
2. Why have so many people become anti-Red Sox? They have won just two World Series titles in the past 90 years so why all of the hate?
They’ve also won 2 World Series in the last 4 years. Have you ever realized how many Red Sox fans there are who aren’t from Massachusetts? Yeah, many of those fans are bandwagons (you know, people who just say that they’re fans of the team who just won a World Series). Many non-Boston fans (not just Red Sox fans) are just sick of Boston fans who say that they are going to win every single title. Take the Boston Celtics for example. Ask any cocky Boston fan to give their honest opinion about who is going to win the NBA Finals this year; I bet each and every one of them would say that the Celtics will just because they acquired Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.
Also, just to add to the Red Sox in general, several baseball fans who aren’t Red Sox fans say that the Red Sox are the New Evil Empire. I have to agree with them. Sox fans always say that the Yankees can buy anyone they want and that’s the reason why they’ve won those championships in the ‘90s. THAT’S NOT TRUE! So get your facts straight! (Jason Giambi was after 2000, and so was Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, etc.) Take a look at the Red Sox’s big contracts: J.D. Drew, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Julio Lugo, and then talk about the Yankees. They both have high budgets every single year; the only difference is that the average Red Sox fan will think of ways to talk about how you should be more anti-Yankee than anti-Red Sox. That’s all I got to say. Makes me wanna puke.
3. Can the Boston Celtics win the NBA title with three all-stars and twelve duds?
Can they? Of course they can. Will they? Maybe. (Sorry for being so broad) The Celtics are off to a great start. They are only 1 of 3 NBA teams who have not lost a game yet (the other 2 being the Los Angeles Clippers and the Detroit Pistons). I’m still sticking with the Phoenix Suns to win the NBA finals (against the Pistons), and the Celtics losing in the Conference Finals.
4. Fact of Fiction: The New England Patriots will go 16-0.
Many people would say fact, but I’m going to have to go with fiction. OK, look who they’re facing in their final 7 games: the Buffalo Bills, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins, and the New York Giants. Just to be brief, my prediction is that they will go 15-1, and lose against the Steelers. Why? Because they have a tremendous defense. They have allowed only 98 points in their first 8 games, which is 43 points less than the Seattle Seahawks (2nd in points allowed, obviously). If they can’t stop the Pats, then I don’t think anyone can. I just have this feeling that the Pats can be stopped, but of course, if you know me really well (cough cough) you’ll know I’m the biggest pessimist ever.
5. What is it like to follow sports in Kuwait? How do you watch the games, read the paper, or watch ESPN? Take us through your typical "sports day."
OK, this is my typical Sports Day on a weekday: I wake up at around 3:00 (yes, in the MORNING). Shocker for someone who still goes to high school, huh? Anyway, after I wake up, I go straight to my laptop and log in at ArmChair GM (SHUT UP, I’m pretty sure you do the same thing too :P). Depending on what day of the week it is, I check out what the news is on AGM. Then, I check a couple of articles that interest me. Afterwards, I turn on my TV to see if they if any Arabs here have a life and decide to put something besides tennis, soccer, or handball. Usually, on a Tuesday morning (Monday night if you’re not following the time difference), they’d actually shock me by putting a football game (NFL or NCAA), but there’s only one sports channel that I get to watch: ESPN (1)… that’s it. No ESPN2, NESN, FoxSports… nothing! (So no Tim McCarver and Joe Buck for me! YESSSSS!)
To add what I said above, I don’t have the newspaper delivered to me. Occasionally, my mom would buy it just to be globally updated, but it’s not updated as far as sports go. They’d put the games from a Thursday when it’s Saturday, which is ridiculous. The main reason I love summer is because of the fact that I leave to Massachusetts every year. I can actually read the newspaper and learn something new by reading it.
