Meet the Users: Romiezzo

Romiezzo is a big Boston sports fan across the globe in Kuwait.

This is the thirteenth edition of the popular Meet the Users series, where The Beast will be interviewing a particular ArmchairGM user. The goal for the series is to allow all users to know each other better. The thirteenth edition goes to Romiezzo

1. How did you learn about ArmchairGM?

I learned about ArmchairGM about 4 1/2 months ago. One day, while I was on the MySpace Baseball Group (like I usually was before I was on ArmChair GM), DNL wrote a topic about AGM. This was the message that he gave me: ‘’“You want to write for us? www.armchairgm.com if you do. We're a group blog, a sports wiki (like wikipedia), and a social network for sports fans. So, take a look and let me know what you think.’’ From then on, I fell in love with it. Thank you DNL, Roblefko, Pean, and Awrigh01.

2. Why have so many people become anti-Red Sox? They have won just two World Series titles in the past 90 years so why all of the hate?

They’ve also won 2 World Series in the last 4 years. Have you ever realized how many Red Sox fans there are who aren’t from Massachusetts? Yeah, many of those fans are bandwagons (you know, people who just say that they’re fans of the team who just won a World Series). Many non-Boston fans (not just Red Sox fans) are just sick of Boston fans who say that they are going to win every single title. Take the Boston Celtics for example. Ask any cocky Boston fan to give their honest opinion about who is going to win the NBA Finals this year; I bet each and every one of them would say that the Celtics will just because they acquired Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

Also, just to add to the Red Sox in general, several baseball fans who aren’t Red Sox fans say that the Red Sox are the New Evil Empire. I have to agree with them. Sox fans always say that the Yankees can buy anyone they want and that’s the reason why they’ve won those championships in the ‘90s. THAT’S NOT TRUE! So get your facts straight! (Jason Giambi was after 2000, and so was Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, etc.) Take a look at the Red Sox’s big contracts: J.D. Drew, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Julio Lugo, and then talk about the Yankees. They both have high budgets every single year; the only difference is that the average Red Sox fan will think of ways to talk about how you should be more anti-Yankee than anti-Red Sox. That’s all I got to say. Makes me wanna puke.

3. Can the Boston Celtics win the NBA title with three all-stars and twelve duds?

Can they? Of course they can. Will they? Maybe. (Sorry for being so broad) The Celtics are off to a great start. They are only 1 of 3 NBA teams who have not lost a game yet (the other 2 being the Los Angeles Clippers and the Detroit Pistons). I’m still sticking with the Phoenix Suns to win the NBA finals (against the Pistons), and the Celtics losing in the Conference Finals.

4. Fact of Fiction: The New England Patriots will go 16-0.

Many people would say fact, but I’m going to have to go with fiction. OK, look who they’re facing in their final 7 games: the Buffalo Bills, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins, and the New York Giants. Just to be brief, my prediction is that they will go 15-1, and lose against the Steelers. Why? Because they have a tremendous defense. They have allowed only 98 points in their first 8 games, which is 43 points less than the Seattle Seahawks (2nd in points allowed, obviously). If they can’t stop the Pats, then I don’t think anyone can. I just have this feeling that the Pats can be stopped, but of course, if you know me really well (cough cough) you’ll know I’m the biggest pessimist ever.

5. What is it like to follow sports in Kuwait? How do you watch the games, read the paper, or watch ESPN? Take us through your typical "sports day."

OK, this is my typical Sports Day on a weekday: I wake up at around 3:00 (yes, in the MORNING). Shocker for someone who still goes to high school, huh? Anyway, after I wake up, I go straight to my laptop and log in at ArmChair GM (SHUT UP, I’m pretty sure you do the same thing too :P). Depending on what day of the week it is, I check out what the news is on AGM. Then, I check a couple of articles that interest me. Afterwards, I turn on my TV to see if they if any Arabs here have a life and decide to put something besides tennis, soccer, or handball. Usually, on a Tuesday morning (Monday night if you’re not following the time difference), they’d actually shock me by putting a football game (NFL or NCAA), but there’s only one sports channel that I get to watch: ESPN (1)… that’s it. No ESPN2, NESN, FoxSports… nothing! (So no Tim McCarver and Joe Buck for me! YESSSSS!)

To add what I said above, I don’t have the newspaper delivered to me. Occasionally, my mom would buy it just to be globally updated, but it’s not updated as far as sports go. They’d put the games from a Thursday when it’s Saturday, which is ridiculous. The main reason I love summer is because of the fact that I leave to Massachusetts every year. I can actually read the newspaper and learn something new by reading it.

Beast. I think there's a fine line between hating those non-New England residing Sox fans and accepting them. I've been a sox fan for 15 years and was super happy when they won in 2004. That said, I can appreciate that the win, to me, was not NEARLY as meaningful as it was to someone who grew up with generations of disappointment, close calls, a near misses. I got to go to Fenway this summer and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'll never forget it. But I think that as the Red Sox payroll continues to climb, and their success becomes more regular as you noted...it will definitely breed the animosity that was focused on the Yankees for the past 10 years.

Good comment, Sparty. Yes, there are definitely a lot of Sawx fans who have been Red Sox fans for a few generations and have never seen the Sawx win a World Series, BUT, like you said, the Red Sox payroll is climbing and will breed the animosity that was focused on the Yankees for the past decade. The key point about that is that some Red Sox fans are not admitting to that. OK, so... you guys have a high payroll, and look at the deals you guys are sealing. And then they go off talking about the past with the Yankees winning their 26 championships, and saying that it was all because of the fact that their money earned them the 'ships, not the players themselves. THAT is complete BS if you ask me...

I don't like to bash all non-New England Red Sox/Patriots fans but isn't it ironic that the two best teams in the NFL and MLB have fans diehard fans since 2004.

It's not that I dislike Non-New England Boston sports fans. There are many who have good reasons to like them. I can't stand it though when I get crap about the Angels losing by a diehard Red Sox fan since 2004 and who has grown up in Pasadena, California with immigrant parents. Where is the connection to Boston dude!

I think you make a good point about Boston fans, Romi. For me, it's not the team--the Red Sox are actually quite likeable, despite their huge payroll. It's the Sox fans (for the most part) who are obnoxious. Romi has proved himself to be the rare exception. You have wisdom beyond your years, young man. The Pats, however, as a team, are very hateable.

I definitely agree with you Taytay, and thanks for the compliment. I'm sure several people hate Manny for his lack of hustle, but like you said, for the most part, the Red Sox TEAM is liked. I have to say that I AM (kind of) ashamed at (most of) my fellow Red Sox fans. We like the same team, but have very different points of view about the team. The Red Sox have money... admit it. It's not like they're going to hide it for very long anyway. Plus, like I said before, every Boston team (besides the Bruins, cuz they haven't done anything big yet) has one of the biggest hypes in their sport, respectively. As far as the Pats go, they ARE very hateable, and for good reason too, IMO. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop rooting for them. I'm a loyal fan, and when it comes to any Boston team, I always say "Root for the home team", and then go about saying that I'm a fan of certain players on a specific team.

True that. I would never expect a Pats fan to turn on the team because of what happened, but for someone who is not a fan of the team, that makes them loathsome. Having said that, plenty of Cowboys fans turned on them when Jerry bought the team and fired Landry, although I think many of them were only marginal fans to begin with, my mother being a good example.

Well, I AM a Pats fan, but I think that what they did just unethical and completely uncalled for. I would say the same thing about any team. I wouldn't actually say that I'm turning on a team because I still root for them, but to have a team where one of their players admits to taking HGH and then about a month later, we find out that that the same team gets caught spying... that is just ridiculous.
